Is this NOS or a reproduction hood crest?

#1 Post by Russ Myers »

A friend of mine asked me to sell this for him. The problem that we are having is whether it's a NOS, or a well done reproduction.

looks like a re-pro to me. The dots in the rear field are two round the originals look more like scattered sand and not placed dots. and the dead give away is the rear right leg is not connected to the body in the originals. also with the repros the stripes
look shrunken ( slightly concave ) in an the originals the stripes are slightly convex.

These are NOS pre a blunt handle crests slightly different than the A and later quite cool the back ground sand is actually dimples not raised dots and there is a forth finger on the lower top rt antler . as well as a few other oddities.. just thought i would share.
the lineage of the crest really intrigues me.

I am in agreement with Ned. Pictured is the original hood crest from Miss June. There are a few more shots on my website as well. The link is below my signature.

Like most everything else on our cars, it would be naive to believe that the Porsche crest didn't "evolve" over the years, not only during the 356 production years but later as well. Is it "vintage" is the question...not whether it's repro...IMHO.

Bummer. I was right I guess. For obvious reasons, I was hoping that I was wrong, and that this was a fantastic example from the correct era. I know that it was purchased at the Lit Show back in the late 90s as a NOS crest, and it had a twin. That twin was used on a Speedster that ended up winning the Porsche Parade Concours.

Oh well. Maybe I'll buy it from him. It would look cool on my toolbox.

Peter I believe the original question was is it nos or a repro it is not nos
so it must be a repro. as for . how old it is.who knows
As for the question regarding the evolution of the crest .. yes the crest did evolve over the years. I put together a thread last year showing the
changes.. you can pull it up in the archives if you are interested..

I'm gonna wake up this thread... here are some pics from my original 1965 356c hood handle and crest. The color on the crest pad is similar to the red factory car color.

Here is a side-by-side of what I believe is an original B / C hood handle crest (left) and reproduction (right). The left I bought stand-alone. The one on the right was included with what I'm pretty confident was an original hood handle.

To me, the main distinctions to the one on the left are
  1. Metal has more of an orange tint. Maybe the other is just tarnished.
  2. The leg of the letter "R" is rounded
  3. Horse appears fatter
  4. Back includes cast crest, (R), 644
I realize the design of ours that I thought is original is not consistent with Chris and Paul's. Leg of the letter "R" on theirs is straight. So maybe ours is off. :?

Dennis, the one on the right looks to be an original crest used on 356A T1 cars. Very similar to pre-A ones shown above by Ned, but the "thumb" is a bit smaller and not painted.

Hi James. I pulled it off a B / C hood handle. Are the A crest interchangeable with B? Or maybe someone made it fit?

Size should be the same Dennis. The difference are only on the very small details on the front. Also, the '54-55 crests were not plated. It looks like the T1 crest is not plated either.

What is your analysis of the one on the right? What series is that from?

Is there a compilation of these details for each series? This thread is the closest I've found.

You referred to a "thumb" in a previous post. Can you clarify what that is?

Thanks.
