Re: HELP with Pre A exhaust layout

As James noted the upturned-edge modification on the 356 rear body panel was introduced when the engine muffler design changed from flattened to round tail pipes. All 356 bodies from that point on were manufactured with a relief for the exhaust pipes in the tail panel (see drawing from 1954 Workshop manual).

The upturned section was deleted when the tail panel was modified again for the introduction of the 356A line.

Does anybody know if the very first 356A bodies still use the earlier rear clips?

James Davies wrote:Jason, Dansk makes a single-exhaust muffler that is about as close as one will get for a 1955 546/2 engine. I think Stoddard, NLA and Sierra Madre all carry it. You can even get the correct chrome tip for it.

The single-exhaust mufflers provided by Robert are for the earlier 1100 and 1300 cars, which have flattened exhaust tips and the exhaust on the other side of the car.
I had read a while back that the Dansk fit poorly. Is that still the case?

Joris, anything is possible on early T-1 cars. Look at the sun roof. That's why I never say NEVER or ALWAYS. .................

Guys I have acquired all the stuff that Ken used to make Pre A mufflers I’m in the process of getting the pieces made to start assembling the mufflers. Not sure of the demand but I’m willing to make a few if needed.

Thanks
Tony

That's good to hear, Tony. Congrats.
I know Ken put a lot of thought and effort into his work, and it's satisfying to see the results continue.

Part 10 is a heat control valve; There's no flapper--just a hinged disc in it.
Part 8 is the J-piped heater box, but the flapper box (or lower air guide) isn't shown.

I would expect not, as the rear fenders also changed for the 356A, in the shape and height of the wheel opening and how far it extended to the bottom at the back. I would think the pre-A tail would not match up with the higher A rear fenders - 5cm difference roughly.
