How many Karmann Notchbacks/Couperiolets still survive?

#1 Post by steverestelli »

1961-1962 Only----A Sleek and Very Rare Hardtop Coupe---- Styled Over a Cabriolet Body
Image

I like to use the term "COUPERIOLET", as the notchback really started out from the factory as a cabriolet. Many became couperiolets by having their welded tops removed again. It seems like a total of 2,290 of these cars were built.
The first built 1961 Karmann notchback T-5's started out as Reutter cabriolets that had hard tops welded on permanently. These were the very first Porsche's built by Karmann, but were not badged on the right side fender until the T-6 models.
A unique "Karmann Hardtop" or "Notchback" 356B model was produced in 1961 and 1962. The 1961 production run was essentially a cabriolet body with the optional steel cabriolet hardtop welded in place. The 1962 line (T6 production) was a very different design in that the new T6 notchback coupé body did not start life as a cabriolet, but with its own production design—In essence, part cabriolet rear end design, part T6 coupe windshield frame, unique hard top. Both years of these unique cars have taken the name "Karmann Notchback"
Below are the 1961 T5, 1961 T6, and 1962 T6 Notchbacks survivors that were originally listed on the, now defunct, `Unofficial Notchback Registry`
Plus a few more that have been added in as being survivors - If you know a serial# not here, please post and I will add it to the following list of 112 T-5s and 55 T-6s so far:

Great question! You could start a pictorial gallery of the ones that have been seen. I have at least a couple I can share once I get back to my office.

Steve,

I've always liked the T-5 Notch's, owned a couple, and heard a few stories about guys wanting to make them back into a Cab, but I have NEVER actually seen a converted car. Finding an available soft top frame is it's own problem.

This will be interesting, thanks,

Bob

There is one in Jacksonville that has had the top removed, but the long time owners are planning to weld it back on in the near future.

I have been looking to see if this one survived. Went from Michigan to California around 1976-1978. A friend bought it new and here is a picture of a picture taken shortly after he bought it. Somewhere I have the engine #.

Mark-
There was one Notchback and one C Cab from that stash. The C cab went to Europe, but the Notchback is still here, a super rare T6 Notch!
