Hello,
I'm trying to determine the split point, if there was one, when
Porsche changed from smooth case 519 to the ones with ribs,
sometime around 52 or 53. If you have such a car with original
tranny I'll like o hear what kind it is. Thanks.

Re: 519, smooth or ribbed?
Hello Ignazio,
My transmission notes show that #1886 had the smooth case. Probably with an August 1952 casting date.
#2003 had the ribbed case. Probably built also around August 1952. My notes on the early transmissions are not as complete as on the later ones. I also would like to know more regarding casting dates and delivery dates. The problem with the casting date, is that it is not completely visible when the transmission is assembled.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can add to the knowledge.

Both my early and late 53 had ribbed cases.

Here are some pics of a '53 transmission with stamped numbers and casting numbers. I don't know how to interpret the numbers.

You will have to look through the pics a bit for the numbers. Is this a smooth case?

Ignacio, transmission 1781, a smooth-case 519, was delivered on a July 1953 car. So there's definitely some randomness with which these cases were used.

Also, smooth-case 519 transmission 1735 h4 was original to coupe 50899 with a July 18, 1953 production date. Both this car and the above one were Supers completed within a couple weeks of each other. Maybe they had an old stash of year-old smoothies that they were putting on Supers in mid-1953?James Davies wrote:Ignacio, transmission 1781, a smooth-case 519, was delivered on a July 1953 car.
