How to tell if the door handle is original

#1 Post by Mark Hoffmann »

On my '64c the exterior door handles are pitted. How do I tell if they're original before I consider re-chroming them? Thanks

They are pitted. That should be proof enough!
Oh, you can remove them and look at the end of the handle. It will be stamped with a number and will also denote right or left. Those are originals. The repops don't have markings on them.

Thanks Jim, I'm naturally inclined (read whatever means costs less) towards replacing, however some have said the door handle is one of the things that the repo ones don't fit as well so stick with original if possible. I guess you think otherwise (and don't get me wrong, I value your opinion. You have always been a great resource and very generous with your time).

Sorry if I misled you. Actually, I would highly recommend restoring the original outside door handles. Be very careful who does them, though. There are a few spots on the handles that are very thin and a chrome plater that is overly agressive with the polishing wheel can destroy them.

How to tell if the door handle is original

You might want to see if Tony the 356 lock guru can undertake the whole
operation as I cannot count the number of times platers have allowed the
size and detail of the lock receiver area to get "fat" such that the
cylinders cound not fit properly back into the handles. Remeber: experience
is the commodity of which we have the greatest need just the exact moment
before it is acquired.

How to tell if the door handle is original

Verne's Plating in Gardena California is savvy to the risk that Jim mentions and warned me of it prior to accepting my door handles for replating. If the pits on your handles are deep, a careful plater may not remove all of them for fear of burning through to the lock cylinder area.
