Instrument Lights

#1 Post by Iverson Branan »

When I removed the tachometer on my '60 Normal Coupe to send it off to California for a repair I neglected to note the wiring setup. I just jerked everything loose and let the wires dangle. Now a year later I am having trouble getting the lights to work on both the speedometer and the tach. Does one normally pull the speedometer and tachometer out of the dash to insert the lights? I am finding it difficult to do anything on my back with a flashlight in my mouth. The instrument lights themselves, as opposed to the indicator lights , appear to have been wired in series but I have somehow managed to detach the connections and I am now uncertain how they go. And is there a ground wire somewhere in the mix?

My question is, does anyone know if there exists a diagram of the instruments showing from the rear exactly how the several wires go, or possibly a narrative on the subject? I have the factory wiring diagram but I cannot translate it into how things actually look.

Iverson, go to http://356electrics.com/books.htm and order the
appropriate book for your car. These are "must haves" for any 356
owner. They will show you where everything goes.

I am finding it difficult to do anything on my back with a flashlight in my mouth.
Would strongly recommend getting a headlamp for working in those awkward areas. They are inexpensive (NOMA LED lamp for approx. $ 20). They're small, bright and easily strap on the head. Totally frees up the hands. When I lived in the Arctic with its 24 hours of darkness I was amazed at how many people used them. Could be just as handy for dark confined areas light under the dash, engine bay, etc.

Joe's books are fantastic. Great diagrams, great writing, all very easy to understand.
I took some heat from the wife regarding the cost, but in the short time I've owned it it's helped me quickly diagnose and fix two problems in two different cars:

- dome lights not responding properly to door open/close on the '65
- no brake lights or directionals on the '64

I am a complete klutz when it comes to electronics so without Joe's book and its color-coded, idiot-friendly schematics I would have had to take the cars in to a shop. So as I've told the wife, it has already more than paid for itself.

No affiliation, just a very satisfied customer.
