I have recently purchased a 1970 911 targa. Is there a forum as good as this one for early 911's?

I've got an early 911 and am a member of that forum. I haven't spent a lot of time on the forum but it seems that there's a lot of focus on originality and also the value of the cars. Lots of good resources to refer to, especially if your goal is to make your car as original as possible. I would definitely recommend joining, I found a number of good suppliers through the site.

I just joined the 356 Registry today so I can't compare the 2.

I find EarlyS, just as the 356 Registry, to be an invaluable resource. There are those interested solely in originality and there are some "Outlaw" types. To each his own. Introduce yourself and expect a warm welcome and lots of helpful tips for your new 911. It quickly becomes an obsession. :)

I write for both magazines, the ESSES is not as large as our magazine but its good. The forum is also good, with some very dedicated members.

I'm a member of the Early 911S Registry. It's a good place for the most part. Just don't try to sell a car on there. That can get ugly.

Good point on not trying to sell a car there.
I once asked for value on a car, and the assumption was made it was for sale.
It was for insurance purpose only.
The beating went on for some time

And the Early 911S Registry actually IS a registry of 1964-73 911s. From time to time a list of owners is sent to each of the members. It's certainly not a complete list but it's fun to know who else has the cars.

If you're signing up as a member of the early 911S registry, you get a copy of the list. I think the updated list goes out when it's time to renew your membership.

I agree that it would be a mistake to list a car for sale on the early S site. However, I observe similar beatings from 356 listers on this forum administered to 356s for sale. The poor guy from Springfield might really believe that his car is a peach and is not misrepresenting it.

I've sold several cars on the S Registry - no issue if you have a good car and give the straight facts, good and bad.
You'll be eaten alive if you misrepresent anything :D
(and rightly so!)
But, no doubt about it - the 356 Registry is MUCH friendlier!

Don't get me wrong, it's a good group and I like it. But like every forum, sometimes it's members light the torches and start to chase the monster from the village, without really knowing why.

LOL, as with all forums, if you allow annominity, i.e. handles, when logged on, WE all tend to say things that we may regret if we have to use our real names.

Thank the moderators of this forum for keeping forum civil. The members as a whole are also civil.

I know many of the guys in the 911S Registry in SoCal. By-and-large they are after the same goals as we are in the 356 Registry and are bunch of great guys.

I drove from Ann Arbor to Rochester NY with cash to buy an early 911 in 1999. The online pictures were fuzzy (as they all were) so I called the local dealer to do a PPI. They could not do it within the time frame so I contacted a local "specialist" who inspected it and gave it the green light.

I got out of my car, walked up to it and said "no thanks". The guy thought I was renegotiating. I told him I did not want it and was leaving. He kept asking why but I didn't want to rain on his parade. Finally after much pleading to tell him why, I walked him around his car and showed him paint runs, ill fitting doors, over-spray, and underbody accident damage on his "perfect condition" car. As my brother in law and I drove away, I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw him standing next to his car with his head down, obviously feeling very depressed.

He really thought his car was a 10. The shop that did the PPI would not give me my money back, either. From there on out, I have only trusted people that I have heard good things about or already have a connection with.
