How does a pre-A blinker knob flash?

#1 Post by Jeff Tanko »

I've finally got the wiring done and lights all hooked up. All the blinkers blink like they are supposed to, but I'm getting no power to the bulb in the end of the blinker lever. Where does this bulb get it's power? Is it internal to the switch? Is there something I can check without having to take the switch completely apart? Thanks for the help.

How does a pre-A blinker knob flash?

Jeff,
In answer to how does it work, at GE we would say, "just fine".
But you want more details I guess.
First off you don't have our book, because the answer is there.
Or even look in the Technical and Restoration Guide, the first volumn.
Further on our web site shows how to test the Hella flasher used on the Pre
A cars. It calls out the terminals that the little bulb is connected to for
testing.

You want to do this first to be sure the Hella flasher is working.

But you want details, okay, the web site is okay for testing, but the car
isn't connected that way.
The little bulb ties to "K" and + on the switch to "K" and to #54 of the
flasher.
Hope that helps.
Joe.

So here it goes

We're using a modern style 3 prong flasher. How would it be wired in this case? Thanks.

Ok, more info. I have power at the bulb socket, and it does flash with the blinkers. But...I have to run a jumper from the stalk to ground to get it to work. I have no empty terminals, or extra wires. How is the stalk supposed to be grounded? Thanks

Ok, I figured it out. It's supposed to ground through the flasher. When using a modern 3 prong flasher, The wire from "K" on the blinker switch must go to ground, leaving the "P" terminal on the flasher empty.
