pre a body panel Question

#1 Post by Guest »

I was under the car cleaning and noticed many small pieces of sand and pebbles stuck between the front inner fender wells behind the tire and the outer fender where the two panes meet. Should there be extra undercoating or some type of caulk to fill this seam. Or is this the reason why they all rusted back in the day.

Thanks

As far as I've been able to determine, there was nothing extra there, just heavier undercoating on the seams. Some spots on 80486 were nearly 3/8" thick with undercoating.

Watch the " Made By Hand" video and you will see why it's so thick. They used a board to hold the car at an angle while upside down to apply the under coat and it all ran down to that corner

The most important thing is that it creates a great dam to trap water and salt as well as small pebbles etc. behind it. When resealing this area make sure the new material (thick or thin) doesn't create a new trap .
