concours prep Tips wrinkle top ???

Hello all
need some tips
I will be showing my car for the first time at a judged concours at the end of the month at lime Rock. not looking to win just a respectable showing. spent the last month cleaning waxing and touching up she look nice and will show well . but I do drive the car with the top down. and have some minor wrinkles in the top what is the max points you can loose for a wrinkled top . is there any way to reduce these?? also is the under carriage judged?? for cleanliness if so I may need to put the kids to work. I have watched the cars being Judged but never paid attention, always seamed like allot of work. Can any one email or fax me old judge sheet.. . any hints or tip appreciated.

If you have access to a steamer, you can steam them out. Or, get the top wet and let it dry, maybe put it in the sun.

Hi Ned

I judge the 356 and early 911's in concourse in Australia and the bottoms of the car are judged in Full Concourse category as opposed to Wash and Polish category where the bottoms of the car and engine bay are not judged.

We would deduct points for a wrinkled top but it would depend on the overall condition of the top and not just if it has wrinkles. Wrinkles would be a minor deduction if they themselves are minor.

As for the undercarriage, the easiest way to clean it is to find a friendly mechanic, sling him a little folding for the use of his hoist and pressure cleaner for a few hours, put on a raincoat and goggles and spray away. This method will remove most minor road grime which is all your car should have if it is a concourse level car as most concourse cars are driven sparingly and virtually never in the rain so do not generally accumulate a road grime buildup. Pay particular attention to the inside of the wheels, remove the wheels and clean the brakes in detail, degrease the underneath of the engine, clean the shocks. Wipe everything dry with a white towel and repeat if the towel is dirty after completing the drying process. Be sure that you do not damage any decals which may be fitted to your shock absorbers etc. It is a good idea to have spare decals handy in case you do accidentally damage them.

Ned,

Different Concours events are judged differently. Some may judge the undercarriage, others may not. If cleaning the undercarriage as Michael suggests above sounds like a lot of work (and it is) I would definitely determine in advance if the undercarriage is judged in the particular event you have entered. If not, that time and elbow grease would be better applied to the four primary areas: exterior, interior, engine bay and storage.

Here is an extensive article on Concours preparation that I came across some time ago. It is a 68 page PDF so it takes a couple of minutes to download, but I am sure you will learn a lot by reading through it. Good luck!

Often club shows are called Concours. These events are points judged based on authenticity and condition.

I prefer to show my car in non-club vents where a Concours is strictly a beauty contest. Beauty and grace are more important than grass in the tires or some road grime left over from driving to the show.

My Continental Mark II convertible has been in every major Concours except Pebble and no one has ever asked me to raise the hood. Very few, if any, have asked to look in the trunk or even look under the car. I always offer to open the hood, but no one's asked for judging purposes.

The Continental Cabrio gets about the same amount of attention. I always show it with the top down and have never been asked to put it up. It too, while flawlessly painted, is now a driver. I think we get more respect for driving it than putting it on a pedestal.

Good luck at the show. The people that you meet and the lasting relationships that develop from those meetings will last forever.

The Holidays are generally Peoples Choice and many folks never
open their engine lids and I absolutely refuse to vote for a 356 unless
it is all open for display and inspection. I would encourage others to
withhold their votes unless the car is all open and let others know how
they feel. No full 'disclosure' no vote from me.
Another thing to consider is the fast that 'odd' color 356's are
generally winners. Andy kept a list of winners from last years ECH and
his theory was proven again. The only cars that had 'common' colors that
were winners didn't have any odd color cars in their class. Now... by
odd I exclude red, silver, black etc.
This should start a thread ;-)

heck, back when I showed my cars , and all my cars were daily drivers, I
brought closet door mirrors and placed them at all four corners so that
people could see the undercarriage clearly without having to bend a knee.
