Swepco leaks out of Groove Pin in Bearing Housing
Hello,
I'm working on my '65 Coupe doing a brake rebuild and other things. I noticed that the driver's side groove pin in the bearing housing has Swepco coming out of the top of the pin. The axle tubes are hanging down as the car in on 4 jack stands, if that makes any difference. Can I seal the pin somehow or do I just live with this leak.
Thank you,
Steve

The Blue Crap leaks out of everything you put it in except its original container,...and I would keep an eye on that.
Gave up on that snake oil long ago and very quickly. In a 356 gearbox, adequately filled, it gets whipped up into a fine mist which escapes through the vent tube, collects, then runs onto the floor.

Tim,
Oh, I thought Swepco was suppose to be the Best to use for our cars! What do you use?
Thanks,
Steve

I've rationalized it by figuring if it could find its way out, it also was finding its way in [ to all the nooks and crannies that you want it to find it's way into]. Just be sure you haven't overfilled the case.

The level is actually low from leaking and putting in new axel boots.Jeffrey Leeds wrote:I've rationalized it by figuring if it could find its way out, it also was finding its way in [ to all the nooks and crannies that you want it to find it's way into]. I'm sure this will lead to many other recommendations, or condemnations, but I have used Swepco in all my pre '90's Porsches with good experience with never a transaxel failure or undue wear. So it works for me.

My C trans is pretty tight and Alan talked me into Swepco 4 or 5 years ago. It did make a hell of a difference in shifting (I've got one of John's short-shifter kits on the car).
There remains some leakage/weeping/condensation, but certainly no worse than most 356s, Brit bikes, Italian cars, etc.

Re: Swepco leaks out of Groove Pin in Bearing Housing
That pin is what anchors the bearing housing to the axle tube. There is a product made by Wurth called "orange sealant" (item #0893574050) that will stop even Sweepco from finding a leak. I use it on all press fit applications (axle tubes, frt. pulley etc.). Your current situation, remove the pin and coat /seal with "orange sealant", then replace the pin with the groove facing outward, away from the axle housing.
Murphy's law will now come into play: sweepco will travel to the next "hole".
if you can't find it, I sell it here at Klasse356.com or just email me (ed@klasse356.com)
Sweepco isn't the only reliable gear oil on the market, what are other folks using?

For balky manual gearboxes you can also add some of this stuff. Old mechanic's trick learned from old mechanic. With SWEPCO I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze.Ron LaDow wrote:My C trans is pretty tight and Alan talked me into Swepco 4 or 5 years ago. Thanks Guys.
Ed you said: "Your current situation, remove the pin and coat /seal with "orange sealant...."
My trans has never been rebuilt or removed from the car (as far as I can tell and I have paperwork from new). So, can I just drive the pin up with a punch and hammer, seal the pin then hammer pin back down? Any special tricks or tips on doing this?
Thanks,
Steve
