Steve, In the end, I'd do whatever Vic recommends. The guy who makes his living doing, is way ahead of the hobbyist.

Vic,

What was your recommendation? I’m not really clear what you would do.

How about my mileage question? I know you are a trans guy, so what do you say? Maybe 250,000 miles? 300,000? More?

Inquiring minds would like to know. Well, a least I would. :)

Thank you,

Steve

I have seen trannys with 200,000 miles on them, and everything is perfect. I have also torn down ones that had been rebuilt after only 60,000 miles, according to the invoice history.
Main concern: ring gear bolt tightness.
Second, differential housing cracking.
Third, shift finger breaking.

But, what was YOUR recommendation on the pin? I’m not really clear what YOU would do. Would you remove pin, apply Wurth "orange sealant", replace pin OR don't remove pin but clean area with either starting fluid, then apply the Loctite Green Wicking Threadlocker?

Thank you,

Steve

Yes, remove pin. Clean as well as possible. Install pin with your choice of sealant; practically anything will work if the hole is dry. If it still oozes after all that, clean up the exterior and apply JB Weld.

Steve,

Did it work? My passenger side tube is leaking. I can see that the pin groove is
broken in tube now when I removed it. I wonder should I have it welded shut
and then put the pin in with Wurth sealant. It's quite strange construction,
no seal in the axle end and tube joint.
I just can't stand any leaks, perhaps I just should live with them?

If the wheels/axles are hanging down, DON 'T add oil till it comes out of the filling hole--that's too much when the car is back on its wheels for the normal driving position. (or still on a drive-on rack?)
The -644 & later trans. only takes 3,5 liters; Fully draining the oil? Raise each axle end w/a jack so the tube(s) will empty out abap.
If the axles are hanging down, the oil level should be about 1/2" below the hole--use a pipe cleaner to measure.
