I have to Purchase a LIFT, Any advice?

LIFT Needed

I have to Purchase a LIFT, Any advice?

Mainly, it's a  storage issue, need lift for 356 1960 Roadster and 1991 Lotus Elan

Need guidance as to the best lifts and which ones give you the most for Price.  Requirements:

four post lift

7,000-8,000 lb capacity
Has to be more towards the compact size

I have read about:
1. the Dennmar 7,000lb seems OK made over seas $1850 shipped
2. Pro Park 8S 8,000 lb with adjustable height points and double locks for safety - like this one for price and what it offers  Not sure of price, seems like $$1795 + shipping

These three seem very well made except are almost double in price from the above.
3. Back Yard Buddy
4.  Stinger $4200
5.  RHI

I would appreciate any stories , good , bad, and nightmares, as well as, advice.

Some of you I hope to see at the ECH soon.

Thanks,

Denny

[SUSPECTED SPAM] RE: I have to Purchase a LIFT, Any advice?

#2 Post by Ken Daugherty »

Denny,
We have three 4 post lifts. One is a Back Yard Buddy. It is the
best on the market an probably the most expensive.
Next we have a Pro Park 7 from Greg Smith Ent in Indy. It is
probably Chinese but not a bad lift. Priced under 2k.
The third is a brand I forget (we bought it used) and the design
left some concerns. The latching dogs rested on blocks and there were no
provisions to prevent the latch from slipping off the blocks. We welded
strip's of 10 gauge steel along the blocks to prevent the latches from
slipping out. Next we bolted it to the floor and also bolted it to the
concrete block wall in two place and to the stud wall in another. It
doesn’t budge, even with a 61 Chevy on top. The only reason we are now
using it is that the 1930 Ford would not fit under the BYB or the Greg
Smith lift. But the BYB and the GS lifts are just fine for a 356 or
other later car.
We are considering selling the Greg Smith lift because we are
rearranging the shop and wont be needing it. If anybody in the
Louisville area is interested in a 4 post lift contact me off line.

Denny, my advice is to read these two articles:

Tool Number One: Garage Lifts
By Gordon Maltby
http://www.356registry.org/Tech/garage_ ... altby.html

Garage Lifts
By John Audette, Ken Daugherty, Rick Dill, Ned Hamlin, Lloyd D. Keigwin, David Jones, Dick Weiss, David Winstead

In the first article is this very useful diagram:

Cheap

#4 Post by Mike Baskette »

When my neighbor was in the market for a lift I suggested Backyard Buddy. Well, "he is cheap" and didn't do his homework. He bought the cheap brand, I don't recall the name, it doesn't matter.

I will not stand under it. I was a welder for 25 years and I cannot figure out why anyone would purchase an item that is holding up a car that sits on four little tabs.

Let us review. A person risks their life by standing under an unsafe lift because they are to cheap to buy a good lift? Let us go one step further. What about the car on top and on the bottom? Is that a moot point?

Spend the extra money.........don't be like my neighbor.

I have no affiliation with any lift company
