Seeking advice on buying & installing a Nardi Steering w

#1 Post by Alex Mestas »

Hi 356 er's:

I'm considering replacing my standard (Non horn ring) steering wheel on my 63 356 B T-6 Coupe, with perhaps a 14" Nardi wood steering wheel like the one pictured below. I was wondering if any of you on the forum that have done this, or have knowledge of what all is involved in changing out and adapting a steering wheel.

What are the things I should be looking for? Does anyone know what specific steering wheel or adaptor & horn button I need to purchase in order to make that transition on my car.

Additionally, does anyone have any recommendation as to where I can purchase a Nardi or perhaps have one that they would like to sell, please contact me off line?

I'm never been a real big advocate of purchasing parts off E Bay, for the obvious reasons,

Any help would be appreciated.

Below, pic of a Nardi and adaptor hub purchased from Classico Wheels, $509 incl shipping, 07/2006.
Hub is quality billet alum, well suited for painting or polishing. Horn button is held in place with alum ring, 5-stainless steel allen head bolts which I sanded flat and polished. Horn button assembly included. Simply remove existing wheel, install the Nardi using old nut/washer.

Alex,
Classico has nice wheels (Nardi & others), they fit correctly and are set up for our cars:

Alex,
If you want to save a few bucks use the following for 15"Nardi:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nardi-St ... QQtcZphoto

14" Nardi:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nardi-St ... QQtcZphoto

356 B/C hub (photo is generic, they will send the correct one):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nardi-St ... QQtcZphoto

The Nardi horn button and ring are included with the wheel and if you need a Porsche button they are also readily available on eBay or the Sierra Madre Collection among others.

I used the free shipping option with Crowders and they sent it UPS ground rather than the
indicated USPS parcel post. It all arrived in one box within a week and in good order for about $375 total for the larger 390 wheel. Should be about $ 10 less for the 360.

Jeffrey,
Speaking from my experiences with Classico, there isn't any product at any price worth
the hassle of trying to deal with them. Poor communication, poor attitude. :( They
have forgotten the old adage about the customer coming first.

Yes, Jeffery has beautiful and done right products. I have one of his 356A wheel adapters and small horn button for a dished Nardi wheel that I already owned.

Ahh yes, after trying multiple times over the past few years to become one of
those lucky souls, and with nothing but a recorder to speak to and e-mails querys
that are either unanswered or if answered, the answer has nothing to do with the
question. I like you Jeffrey, I just don't like the way you do 'business'. :(

I like the Nardi wheels but they look pricey.

Michael,
Using your link the price of a 15" riveted, dished, thin slot wheel with black hub and plastic
horn push comes to 193 Pounds plus shipping, over $ 400. If you get the polished hub and
a plain billet horn button the price goes up 64 Pounds or about $ 130 for a total of $ 530,
both slightly higher than an equivlent Nardi. Both types can be found on e-Bay. Used ones are readily available in nice condition for a lot less. Aside from the appearance, the real difference between the Nardi and the Moto Lita is the thickness of the rim. Motos are thin, Nardis are nice and fat. Personally the Nardi feels better to me but when I use a Moto or other thin wheel, a pair of stringback driving gloves makes for a comfortable grip.

I got a price of £181.25 for a 15" dished riveted wheel with boss kit and porsche horn

button. = $335 at today's R of E (the pound is sinking against the dollar)

These people sell Motolita wheels in the US but not Porsche hubs.

http://www.lbcarco.com/cgi-bin/gen5?nex ... 2172209&p=

You could buy the wheel in the us and the hub direct from Motolita to save on postage.

Michael,
I bought one with a billet hub and billet horn button for $ 275 USD with shipping from Britain but that was 5 years ago.
Heres a current buy for a new one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTO-LITA-15-MK3-DI ... 8732318328

or this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTO-LITA-15-MK3-DI ... 8732586093

A model hub:

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTO-LITA-F8H-S-WHE ... .m20.l1116

Other types available on request from this seller and billet horn buttons also.

Still much less expensive than your US source. BTW they also have the Derrington wheel and all of these are also available in 16" if you want the correct original size. About $ 130
more.

Alex,
Here's the wheel I first mentioned installed in my 69 912 Targa. Same setup as 356 BC.
I removed the Nardi button from it's holder and replaced it with a Momo plain black, also
available from Crowders via e-bay, $23, free shipping. I like the clean look without the shiny metal and logo.

I think it is very disingenuous to imply that all these products and wheels
cited are in fact the same in finish and quality. I am well aware that Joel
thinks I am six shades of a jerk and I am in no position to dispute this. I
will mention that it is not me but my products that will be a permanent
fixture of your Porsche. Despite the extreme diffculty involved in reaching
us which I can only apologise for , this is simply a fixture of the
circumstances of my life, I do not believe that the many who have soldiered
through and purchased our products regret doing so. I would suggest looking
at
www.ClassicoWheels.com/NewB,C,911

www.ClassicoWheels.com/BC16

www.ClassicoWheels.com/BCbargain

www.ClassicoWheels.com/B.C.911wood

www.ClassicoWheels.com/dishednardi

This does not include the 901/911 VDM wood wheel we have made, the 911R
wheel, the 911ST wheel, the 380mm 911RS wheel, the 356 A flat Nardi, the
356A Derrington in 15" and 16", the factory style VDM GT or our Ultima shift
knobs, see www.ClassicoWheels.com/shiftknob and www.ClassicoWheels.com/Black
.
Each and every one of these products is made exclusively by or for us and
is NOT available from any other source. Our policy has been that if you are
unhappy with your purchase, simply return for a refund, simple as that. I
would ask how many people on this list have I sent a wheel to simply on
aproval or sent two styles so that they could compare in the flesh? In a
profusely selfserving tone I must ask what other company even begins to
offer such quality and depth of coverage for the Porsche automobile in terms
of vintage wheels? Just be sure you are comparing apples to apples,
everything looks nice at monitor resolution.
