741 single mount trans front mount.

#1 Post by Bill Daugherty »

Hi all,
I have finally gotten to the transmission of my '60 restoration project, and discovered I need a new front mount for the trans. It's single mount, 741. I can't locate one anywhere. Any and all ideas wiuld be appreciated. Thanks

Hi
Rainer Cooney rebuilds them and Vic may have a usable one. Jon is hoarding all the remaining ones for use on his S-90 Rdstr.

Zim's can replace the rubber in the mount if you have one of the many that have deteriorated. Th usual turn around is two weeks.
Jacques: The S-90 vehicles used the two transmission mounts like all the other cars except those built in 1961. al zim

The first few Super 90 vehicles, built in late 1959, had single-mount transmissions. All subsequent models, from
1960-63, had twin-mount transmissions.

I'm in the same situation with my early 60 T-5 with the single mount trans with front mount "#741 305 021 00".
After pulling the trans out yesterday, ALL the mounts have seen better days. I would love to replace all the mounts, including the inner rubber grommet of the swivel head , Part # "74130550700", as it came apart when I disconnected it from the transaxle. That part seams to be available with some distributers, does it include this inner grommet? I guess I should not be surprised that this front single mount is hard to find with the limited number of cars originally fitted with them. thanks ahead of time for any suggestions.

I'm asking again because this thread is a year old.

Stephen, there were two links with rubber bushings:
741.305.507.00 Left hand thread connection
741.305.508.00 Right hand thread connection
Separate parts of the tension rod are shown below...

Jon, do you have a picture or diagram of where those links go? I have never seen that style.

Martin,
It was only used on early 356B's with single-mount transmissions.
The workshop manual refers to it as a torque rod.
It was mounted to the RH side of the transmission, at the intermediate plate.

One of Porsche's dumber designs. I understand the engineer responsible was relocated to Edsel.

The Chrysler K-car had one of those. They failed and the engine fell over in the engine compartment.

That engineer had quite a career. Before Porsche ran him off, he managed to design the bottom-sender gas gauge, and the 9XX external oil tank filler masquerading as a gas tank! All this after the famous TOCV on the '58 engines.
I know he spent some time at GM, cramming the V8 in the Monza, requiring lifting the engine to change plugs. I lost track of him after that, but now I know!
