What's the best cleaner for tool kit bags?

I'd like to renew my '63 bag, but I don't want to go to an industrial-strength cleaner like an acetone if it toasts the vinyl. Anyone have a source for the fabric ribbon the original uses?

(It doesn't look very snappy next to Harvey's travel kit, which is really nice)

Jim,

Eric Cherneff did a terrific article on tool bag restoration in the Registry magazine several years ago, with photos and product info for cleaning, rust removal. I'll see if I can find it, but you might try to contact him directly.

Jon and Jim,
Eric recommended a product called "Whink" to remove the rust on the fabric inside a tool kit bag of mine. It is very potent and requires the use of caution. I don't have the article, but Eric does follow the Talk discussions daily. He'll probably post when he sees your question. Regards, Bob

I wrote an article in Vol 30 #6 (March/April 2007) that describes the whole process. Last time I did this, I used "Rust Stain Magic", which is a cleaner with hydrofluoric acid - I'm sure similar products with different names are out there. Be careful and heed all the safety instructions with whatever product you use!

I believe Vinigar is a good cleaner that is natural, but I don't think it will get rust out.

Thanks for the recommendations, gents.

Does anyone have a line on the fabric ribbon that ties the bag up?

Jim,
I share Eric's "Restoration of 356 Tool Kit Bags" from Registry Magazine Volume 30, Number 6 pages 54, 55, and 56. from March/April 2007, with 356 owners who attend our detail clinics or participate in our Concours series.

I see you are from So. Cal. and if you can't find a copy of the article in the magazine or CD from the Registry,if you send me your address I can snail mail you a colored copy.

Thanks for the reference, Dick, I'm pretty sure I have that issue. I'll check it out.

To remove rust stains on my tool bag, I used a product called Magica Rust remover. It did a decent job. Check out their website for info about the product.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone would scan (or whatever is required) and provide a .pdf, or web link to Eric's article on cleaning tool kit bags. Thank you!

I've not tried it on the tool kit bag, but Griots Garage plastic cleaner did wonders on my door panels and instrument panel pad. For rust, the best stuff I've used is Rusteco - http://www.rusteco.com
It's said to be benign and it really does a good job on rust.
