I live very close to the Paterak Bros. and they are certainly among the top 356 restoration shops. Gaspare at Gasworks is also extremely well versed in all things 356, however, before simply assuming the transmission is in need of major surgery, ( $$), try adjusting the linkage first. I have known of 356 'restoration' shops that would gladly take your hard earned dollars and then simply make the adjustment I mentioned, while charging a fortune. You won't break anything and will probably solve the problem.

I dropped off my 356 B at Gaswerks auto in Paramus, NJ for transmission rebuild and discovered there is damage to original case. He sent trans along with damaged case to CMS engineering in Arizona md they just replaced the case. I wanted to know if anyone knows of anyone that can repair my original case. Someone mentioned Walt, from Competition Engineering. The snap ring groove is damaged so it would have to be enginerring company. Any advice would be appreciated.
Best, Paul

Jack rebuilt the transmission for my '63. Flawless and shifts very well with authority and no hesitations at all. Believe you can trust Jack all the way.

As long as you are the one lying on his back supporting it like in Made By Hand I am sure Eric will help you.

There are a few rebuilders who can replace parts successfully. There are a very, very few who can diagnose and fix a problem like a noisy transmission.

You hear: "They all make some noise", or "That noise will go away after some miles". Can you imagine that a relatively unknown, small maker of expensive little foreign cars would have been successful if during a test drive the transmission was noisy or hard to shift?

Shifting and driving should be silent and smooth.

Actually, when Porsche started production, they used the stock VW full-crash transmission; they WERE noisy and hard to shift.

Vic, you said it: when they started, selling a few cars. A few years later the transmissions were good and they were selling thousands of cars.

so the solution is to have noise cancelling headsets and don't convert to a short shifter. or send it to Vic, Jon, Erick or me and pray.

Re: Transmission 356B case welding

I recently had my Transmission rebuilt and the original case was found to be damaged. I am trying to find a welder that does repair to transmission case. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Damage is to snap ring groove.
