Strange S90 motor

#1 Post by Adam Wright »

People do some weird stuff, so it never shocks me when I see it, but it doesn't mean I understand it. I am assuming this Super 90 motor was in a dune buggy or something like that because the exhaust goes straight up, but while I have some ideas on what the strange bolt on the generator stand is/does, figured I would see if anybody had seen this before. Also, the re-configuring of the oil and coil is bizarre.
Any ideas?

Considering the strange location of the "zero" on the degree wheel, I would suspect that the stud probably anchored some home-made timing pointer.

Cheers,

My guess is for a bolt-on pulley/belt guard, popular for open engine dune-buggy engines....

Not so strange, Adam. Rather very "avant-garde".

janos- So Adam has an early application of the exhaust enhanced aero used in current F1 designs? If only Billy Bob had patented that idea when he built that Buggy!

Adam, is the S90 engine for sale? I assume it has the early non-ribbed S90 heads.

The 918 looks a lot like a Ferrari 360 except for the top and back of the rear end. I like it, but it will cost far more than I would be willing to pay for a car.

Eric-
The engine is a late 63 Super 90 so it should have all the improvements like the reinforced heads, the larger oil stuff, and the counterweighted crank. We just got it in and planned to put it on the stand to see what we could see and hear. Check back with me in a few weeks and I will know more about price etc.

OK. I will check back. I thought the serial number was 800,xxx, but I see it is 0800,xxx so it would be a late 63.

I think we have an early S90 engine also, if that is what you are looking for, I can check in the morning, we have 2-3 Super 90's right now.

Wow, this thread has wandered all over the place. But since we went there, was the winged Spyder at Montetey in 1998? Displayed rather than raced? I recall that it was being gassed up at a local station while I was there, but thought it was being driven by a German. Needless to say, I stood and watched / listened to it as it drove out of sight...

My car is a 63. Original engine was 806855. 806855 supposedly still exists. It was installed in another 356 in Oak Ridge Tenn around 2003.

The car in my avatar is a rather sad 1965 C I picked up for parts recently, not the car I am restoring.
