Bondo gets expensive when you buy it by the 55 gallon drum!Steve Proctor wrote:...nothing a little bondo won't fix...
The car has its transmission, interior, VIN tags, all of its suspension and many other bits. It is missing the engine and two of the gauges. The guy who sold it to me took the windshield out. It was originally sky blue. The surface rusted in many places where the red repaint flaked off.

As the current owner having a blast taking the motor apart, the story is only getting better (stranger). The distributor is a BR9 with a June 56 date and 4 holes drilled in the bottom (I have no idea why this was done). That said, I'm having fun and I'm sure the best is yet to come....

Eric - for parts! It looks better than a lot of cars being restored these days!
It's all in the marketing, such as, "Project that needs some TLC." or "Super rare Porsche for sale - worth $75,000 when done. Restoration started."

Re: Strange S90 motor
I have seen this configuration of oil filter and coil on some industrial engines, studs on the generator support were , if memory serves right, for the gouvernor, so maybe the fan-house and generator support are from an industrial engine.Adam Wright wrote:People do some weird stuff, so it never shocks me when I see it, but it doesn't mean I understand it. I am assuming this Super 90 motor was in a dune buggy or something like that because the exhaust goes straight up, but while I have some ideas on what the strange bolt on the generator stand is/does, figured I would see if anybody had seen this before. Also, the re-configuring of the oil and coil is bizarre.
Any ideas?

Re: Strange S90 motor
It's slowly coming apart. The head bolts were on there good. A little Kroil, waiting a day, and then torquing the heck out of them today.....and they're off. Managed to only pull 2 case studs with the head bolts. Did find that the heads are not s90 heads, but SC heads. Probably the only time in my life that I'm disappointed to find SC heads. If anyone has a set of 63 s90 blackened heads, Im in the market....and I have a set of SC heads for trade. More to come as we open the case in the next few days....

Mario,
The SC heads are infinitely better than any S-90!

Re: Strange S90 motor
Vic, I'm in complete agreement. Any other time I'd be elated to find these heads, but my Dad and I are trying to restore the car to as original as possible....which this will likely be the last time we do an "original" car, it's a real pain!

I think you'll find it easier to work with a split case if you put the engine stand adapter on the 3 - 4 side of the case.
Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.....

Re: Strange S90 motor
With a lot of help from Jim Hardie to get the flywheel off, it's finally all apart today. Didn't have time to measure the crank, but looks like the bearings are Standard. Going to stick with the SC heads, I learned I should listen to Vic to begin with also, motor didn't have the s90 oil screen, but luckily I have a couple of extras to choose from and new gaskets Vic sent me a while ago.
Also, I didn't ignore your advice Wes. We did switch the yoke to take the flywheel off....but then had to re-switch to split the case.
My Dad and I had a blast taking it apart......now to put it back together

Re: Strange S90 motor
I have P*0800839 if you like it, it is for sale complete with a car to drive it home a 1957 coupe. Adam: I had one of your adventures this weekend my only short coming was that I only brought one flashlight with me and after a couple of hours it ran out of batteries. The building was so dark I am not sure that the pictures came out. Many years of stuff that has been stashed. A story to follow maybe? al zim

Re: Strange S90 motor
I have 0800939. I've read that 0800989 was the last S-90engine built. I've also read that 0800xxx, 0600xxx, and 0700xx engines all were all built using C/SC cases. Can anyone verify any of this info?
