Progress looks great Mario, soon you'll be ready for those rebuilt carbs and distributor! How'd you wind up cleaning the case?

Re: Strange S90 motor
I did not think that you could obtain the last number in range of engines. the B- T-6 Shop manuals gives the engine serial numbers for the C/912 cases used.
Regarding the four (4) holes in the bottom of the BR9 distributor in the 60's there was a fear that the spark off the points might set off vapors trapped in the distributor. The holes drilled in the bottom were suppose to eliminate this situation. Which probably never existed in air cooled engines. al zim It wa a long time ago but I was there!

Al, let me know next time you need flashlights, I have thousands, they even have a lighted pen on the other side, so you can write in your diary at night.Al Zim wrote:I have P*0800839 if you like it, it is for sale complete with a car to drive it home a 1957 coupe. Adam: I had one of your adventures this weekend my only short coming was that I only brought one flashlight with me and after a couple of hours it ran out of batteries. The building was so dark I am not sure that the pictures came out. Many years of stuff that has been stashed. A story to follow maybe? al zim

Re: Strange S90 motor
Mario,
The blackened cylinder heads (and cylinders) on the S90 was kinda experimental for heat radiation, but the extra cost became
un-necessary and later engines discontinued the coatings.
Many years ago, I had an engine rebuild job which had only 1-blackened head, so I used a Hi-Heat Black paint to match it.
Dunno where it is today, but after the test run about 1/2 to 1-hr., its smell was gone but the color remained.
As Vic said, S90 heads weren't that good--I have a pair of cracked S90 heads and they're not blackened--and not yet cleaned w/dust-blasting.
They were replaced on a 912 which had a lotta blow-by w/a B/bore kit and it had Zenith carbs! (8-10 yrs. ago and exists out there--somewhere)

Dick, was that a red '66 or '67 912 in Ohio? I put Zeniths on one in the early or mid 70s, a somewhat rusty car. It had the proper heads at that time.

Slowly making progress...case was vapor cleaned (wet blasted) in San Jose. Looks great, we will se how it runs....
Fuel pump is the handy work of Bruce Smith and will soon be joined by the carbs he beautifully rebuilt. Thinking about keeping to pulley for nostalgia.

Lovely motor and it's obvious you are keeping the mechanical tach.
You can contact Vic ( http://356enterprises.com/ ). He has an oil-pump cover that will keep that tach drive and still get you some oil filtering worthy of your efforts.

Also the Heads look new , how did you clean them?
Did you renew the blackening somehow? paint or some kind of coating?

Slowly getting there....
I repainted the heads with VHT Flame Proof. It looks the part, will see how it holds up.
Now for all the tin...

Earlier this evening, same as every day, I was out working on my car, trying to bring her back a little closer to how She should be, and I thought the exact same thing that Adam stated:

No, still looking for original ones that are clear cad for late fuel pump. The ones from our vendors appear to be yellow cad.
