The first time? Wasn't #1 at Monterrey some years back? When Porsche was the featured marque? I'll bet that little guy has been on more transatlantic flights than I have!

A handmade, one-off, prototype is referred to as a "production" car. And preserved? Thats quite a stretch! I could swear I've seen photo of it painted yellow, and with a somewhat different nose. Well, I probably won't be too well preserved when I'm 60 either.

I believe that Number 1 was actually originally painted yellow and not silver but I have never seen a photo of it in yellow. Does anyone have this pic? As I say, I believe but am not totally sure. I have seen photorealistic drawings of it in yellow.

I have also seen pics of it without bumpers and cut off/reshaped front and rear aprons which were certainly different to how it looked on the day it left the sawmill which I have seen pictures of but only in black and white. A colour picture of the day it left the factory would confirm it's original colour as yellow if anyone has one?

I believe the first appearance of Old No. 1 in this country was the 1982 WCH at Monterey when Porsche was the featured marque at the Historics. It was escorted by Ferry Himself and accompanyed by Otto Mathe's car (escorted by Otto himself). All were posed on the grass together and made for some fine shots.

Dr.Wolfgang Porsche and his lovely wife accompanied #1 to the 82 Monterey Historics.

I wrote to the Factory asking if Ferry would attend the event. Sadly Ferry Porsche didn't make the 1982 trip...so i gave a special hand made model of #1 to Wolfgang to take back to his Dad. Ten years later on a visit to Zuffenhausen i had the honor to visit Ferry in his personal office and there in his little trophy/memorabilia case in front was that model.

If I remember correctly what that car was here in 82 ray knight was in the drivers seat as we pushed the car into the exhibit hall. It was poorly restored then. The factory should have brought it to the US and had someone restore it that knew what they were doing. al zim

at the 82 Monterey event, Al Zim, Bill Brown and I (and possibly a few others I don't remember were relaxing in front of the host hotel a day or two before the event started. A large auto transporter showed up. The driver and his girlfriend moved some Parkards and Rolls out to reveal Porsche No1, and the Gurney Formula one car. I didn't sit in No1, but we all helped push it into the hotel. It had just been restored shortly before coming over, but we acted like judges and commented on the wrong steering wheel, late preA gauges, etc, etc, (we thought we were being cool) Interestingly the things we noted were fixed shortly after that event, so someone else probably pointed them out.
What the old man recalls incorrectly is that I sat in and steered the Gurney's 1960 Formula 1 out of the truck and into the hotel. The truck driver's girlfriend was normally doing the steering, but couldn't reach the pedals in the F1 car. Gurney was quite tall, the driver looked around, found the tallest guy helping and assigned me the task. The transporter had one of those elevator tailgates, it was daunting to be 10-12 feet up in the air, on an angle, keeping this priceless car from rolling off, uncertain how hard to push the pedal, unwilling to push less and then getting a cramp, and no room to get your other foot over to help. But no one knew about the cramping leg, we got it safely out and into the lobby. A few years later Bruce Anderson sent me a picture he got of it up in the air, withl me grinning like a hyena. Oh and Al, my son gets to San Francisco on sunday, only 200 miles to go on his cross country ride. Ray Knight

looks like along with number 1.... the Paxton Porsche will be there... and the Glockler hardtop roadster that was restored in New Zealand.

I wonder what other early Porsche treats we are in store for at Pebble.
