Looking for supplier of sound deadening material

#1 Post by Mark Dionne »

I'm looking for a supplier of body sound deadening material "by the yard". I don't need a complete set, and often I just need to replace part of an existing piece. What I mainly have in mind is the "thick tar paper" stuff about 1/8 inch thick, though I also need a bit of the horsehair-like stuff that was on the floor.

Any ideas?

I just installed some sound deadening although I can't remember the brand (Hushmat, Dynamat?) Its peel and stick and is about 1/8" thick perhaps a bit less. You can't by it by the yard but it is sold in various size boxes. It isn't cheap and is readily available off the internet, Ebay, Summit, Jeg's, etc. I had bought some of the cheap stuff from an auto body supply store. One style required a heat gun to mold it and the other style was like glass and cracked very easily.

If you want the most authentic product, Bill Peronne at "The Parts Shop" in Huntington Beach, CA sells kits of the correct material pre cut for the year and type of car you have. But it is not cheap nor available by the yard. Stoddard-NLA and others sell pre cut kits as well, but I do not think they have the tar coating on the back side like the original stuff or what The Parts Shop sells.

Unless you are going for a show car, I would either go with new materials like dynamite where it can not be seen or simple do without.

Toyota sells a sound deadening material in two thicknesses that is similar but not exactly the same - I can get the part numbers for you and maybe a picture of the texture. It's not terribly expensive.
If you send your email, I'll send direct . . .

You might look at Rattletrap Extreme by Fatmat. I think it's similar to Dynamat. 18" x 64" for $32.99 and quick free shipping from their website. I used it and it works great.

Since a couple of people have asked, here's the info on the Toyota asphalt sheeting
Part Number 58651-22H91; 3mm thick; 3.6ft x 2.6 ft sheet
Part Number 58651-22H90; 1.5mm thick; 3.6ft x 2.6 ft sheet
Should be order-able at any Toyota dealer
It is pretty similar to the original stuff used on the C cars and maybe earlier cars which I'm not very familiar.

I'm not sure this will translate to the 356, but I did a lot of research on German "tarred felt" while building our 57 BMW Isetta for show. We found the right weight felt through Buffalo Felt Products in West Seneca, NY. You can order their "Technical Felts" sample card. We soaked the felt in a tar product then pressed a home-made grid on to give it the factory pattern. Again, I don't know if it translates, but most of the 'horsehair' like stuff I have seen on German cars was actually shredded coconut (really), we cut and shaped our seats from new, German made, VW bus shredded coconut rear seats pads. Hand printed the inspection tags from five original fragments, and it all looks pretty good. Hope this helps.

Product: "Dynamat."
Buy direct http://www.dynamat.com/products_automot ... ction.html or from suppliers found via Google search "Dynamat."
I can attest Dynamat Extreme is very effective in damping out vibration/noise.
Notes: About as far away from OEM as one can get.
Product is dense/heavy.

It all depends on the level of "authenticity" you want or if you are trying to do the job well and it does not show anyway. Dynamat is the "high priced spread" and great stuff, but if you go to Eastwood.com, they have their own generic and you can often get free shipping and no tax since the stuff is extremely heavy. I used it everywhere it does not show and the self adhesive and rubber like stuff covered with moisture barrier worked great. Also for the engine bay, rather than pay over $200 bucks, I went to MidAmerica Motorsports (a VW site) and bought the engine covering for $30 bucks. For the gas tank, 30 pound roofing felt is just fine. Not concours, sure, but reasonable and great for the average onlooker.

Oh and if you are interested in old ichy scratchy, I found a box in the many, many boxes my car came in and attach the pictures of it. It says carpet padding and it says 36" x 72", carpet padding on it. You can have it for $20 bucks including shipping if you want it.

I think this may work. It's reproduced later 901 engine material but the outer skin is correct.
