recently purchased an in dash ash-tray for my early 57 coupe. It has a light mounted on the snubber with an interesting contact that turns it on when you open the ash-tray. Have never seen the light before, wondering if it is original.

Sounds like it might be a pre-A cabriolet dash light which were very similar to an accesory ash tray for VW's, but a picture would help I.D.

I've never seen one like that before. Wonder if it might have been an owner added feature....kind of clever.

The light has push on terminals which were not present in the 356 vehicles until the 356C which was manufactured at least 6 years after your car was created. I suspect this was a part made in Germany as an accessory. I have never seen one and taken a lot of 356 cars apart. al zim
