Jack Arct wood steering wheel

#1 Post by Preston Brown »

The recent discussion about Carrera wood steering wheels made me smile. I don't have a Carrera wheel, but I sure do have a nice one! Originally I was going to put a Luisi (Nardi) steering wheel on my car, but when I got it, I wasn't a big fan of the hub adapter setup. Instead, I sent my original, very scruffy plastic-rimmed C wheel off to Jack Arct this fall for him to replace the rim with wood. Here's the result. Almost Carrera, fair price, looks great.

Over the decades Jack has done a number of wheels for me. They are VERY nice and very reasonable, and I have never had any issue whatsoever about turn round time, fair assessment of core I sent, or shipping.

I always liked that Jack stamped his name & the date inside the hub, as seen on yours. Like an artist signing his work; but moreover, if a wheel or the car it was attached to went thru a few owners over time it suddenly did not mistakenly become a "rare original"....yeah, they are that nice!

Jack will apply any type wood you desire from Mahogany to Walnut, with or without black strip, polished or chromed center, fairly priced.

Enjoy the car...go tar heels & best of the New Year to you.

Regards,
George Bryan

From this website. You go to Resources>356 Vendor Links> Specialty Services.
He is the first one listed. Unfortunately, no website for him. Just an email address.

I have seen his work on several friend's 356's and the work is very good and he is very reasonably priced compared to others.

I recently discovered that I have a Jack Arct built beautiful porsche wood steering wheel. It is dated 1997 so it was done 21 years ago. It’s signed and dated. If interested in seeing photos let me know I will send some to you.
I actually thought it was a Carrera wood steering wheel.

Hi all
Sadly, I was contacted by Jack's son, and was told that Jack has passed away.
He did great work on these wheels, nice man and will be missed.

I have a Jack Arct wheel on my car and often think of him when I’m on a long drive. After a drive over the weekend I did a search for him on this forum and found that he had passed away. I’m very sorry to hear that. He put a teak wood rim on my original wheel and also restored my original sun visors back in the fall of 2013. Both are outstanding, but the wheel is really a work of art. The great part of working with Jack was that I was able to choose the rim diameter and finger grip spacing for my personal preferences and he always responded quickly when I had questions. At my request, he sent me many photos of my wheel as it went through his conversion process. I’d be happy to send them on to anyone who’s interested.

I read his obituary and determined that he was 85 years old when he did the work for me. I was never able to meet him in person, but I will remember him every time I drive my 356.

Jack was a good guy. He had a real C2 wood wheel also, attached to a C2! :D
