Hi Charlie,

It was shown in this thread: http://porsche356registry.org/356talk/1/21368.html

It is likely an A car that was some some sort of transition. B dash and knob placement, but A shifter, A fresh air vent pulls below the dash and oval speakers typically seen on A's.

Regards,

I could offer that my '59 Coupe 107520 in silver/red has ivory knobs, but since you called for cars with black knobs, I won't. Happy New Year, everyone!

Hi Dan,
I have a 1959 A coupe SN108177. Vic Skirmants just rebuilt the transaxle and suggested the June timeframe is when the car was built (Hi Vic!). I have the original title and it was sold August 10th out of Cincinnati. It had a black wheel and knobs but I believe that was because they were painted by my dad. He doesn't recall, but I am enclosing evidence in the way of photos (see the ivory wheel in the old photo - I included the one I touched up so to give an accurate feel to what the car looked like then. In looking at some of the other photos I think I see some ivory poking through. Any chance that some of these were sprayed as well?

Hi Justin,

It is interesting that your dad even put black window winders and a black heater knob on the car, but I agree about the ivory. Zoom in on your untouched photo and you can even see the ivory rear quarter window latch knob.

That is very cool to have your dad's car, by the way.

Regards,

Hi Sabastian,
I know that the window winder and trim was painted black, but the heater knob is plastic and is and seems to have always been black. did they make those in ivory as well?

Thanks Jim.

Is the heater knob in your Pre-A ivory? Here is a pic of a '55 with an ivory knob--was that a VW part and did the heater knobs go to black with the advent of the A?

Justin, I think the A heater knobs were almost always black. I say "almost always" because there are always exceptions to the "rule" with the 356...

Best regards,

Barry,

I am wondering if the Pre-A knobs (behind the shift lever) were VW knobs and therefore Ivory, then the A knobs (in front of the shifter) were Porsche specific and black.

My pre-a was a 1953 and the heater pull was in the dash.

Justin -

If you scrape the knobs and find that they are black paint on another color plastic, I think you can be pretty sure that they were not black from the factory. On my car all of the knobs were black plastic including knobs that were not used on the B such as the blinker switch knob and the shifter knob. Also, scraping the paint on the steering wheel showed no ivory or grey or tan beneath, only the base material of the wheel.
