Re: PowerLite Porsche 356 (6 Volt) Starter Motor
One of the problems with starters is that crud get inside them from their normal service. If you are servicing the starter, remove it and remove the end cap. You can check the brushes for wear they should be above the brush holder. Put on a breathing mask and eye protection and blow the starter out with compressed air. Do it outside the garage. You will be amazed what come out. This will make the starter work a lot better. Before installing check your bushing for wear or better still replace it. al zim

If anyone is interested. I used the Power Lite 6V today in a preA 1955 coupe. Works perfect, even with the 120HP high compression engine which is now in the car.

Re: PowerLite Porsche 356 (6 Volt) Starter Motor
Thanks for the report Walter, seems this starter has been around for quite a while but nobody but you has bought one of the 6 volt versions and tried it in a street 356. I looked at their website and realized that the price of that starter is out of my price range, and I will reluctantly have to continue using the original starter in my cars and if it fails I can still buy a few more for the price of one of these.
Not sure if the advertised price is in Euros or Pound sterling but it is either about $700 or $800 respectively and for that money I can pay someone to ride with me and give me a push start if the starter motor fails.

If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

Hi
from what I can tell the starter is a modified Hitachi gear reduction starter I believe they are available for around $200 US from many vendors sold as a 12V starter the degradation due to the lower voltage is not significant enough to make a bespoke unit just get the higher KW unit and use big cables and proper grounds.

It looks similar to what I got from Stoddard for 12v. My only complaint is that it sounds different from the original. It works well.

Glad it worked out. Looks like you slotted the flange holes a bit more to rotate the solenoid away from the underbody(?). I see Sierra Madre offers them in the US for $430, and perhaps other sources.

I think Zims sells a 6 v gear reduction starter ?
I put a 12 v gear reduction starter in my Westfalia, works great..

Hi
try an IMI-101N it is a 12V starter rated at 1.4KW even with a 50% reduction it will have more power than the .4KW stock ones.
