Windsheild wiper assembly

#1 Post by Greg Erickson »

Hi fellow 6ers,
I found some info that there was a variable speed wiper unit made. Does anybody know if this is available and will if work with my 60 B coupe? And can it be made 12 volt? Also, can anybody tell me what the function of the chrome bezel that is located on the bottom of the dash just right of the ignition. It has one wire to it... bundled with the washer switch wiring.
thanks,
Greg

I have a 64 and a 62; both came with the variable speed wiper switch. Given that I have two of them I would say that they are not uncommon. Someone will correct me if I am wrong but there is nothing to change on that part for 12V. 12V will actually be kinder to the switches as they are switching less current.

For the wiper motor there are many options including installing an early 911 12V wiper motor which will bolt onto the 356 wiper frame work by making an adapter. Its not a difficult job. Jim @ EASY probably has the motors for sale. A guy wrote an article about the upgrade and it was very well done. You can find it searching the Registry website. Don't remember his name at this time but its not hard to find.

As for the mystery bezel and wire - someone else will have to help with that.

Greg,
The later cars like the T5 and T6 had a variable wiper
speed motor. They can be retrofitted to your car but you
will need the entire wiper motor system, wiring and the
control switch/control. buy one of Joe Leoni's books on the
wire systems of the 356 and then you can make it happen. Yes
they can be retrofitted to 12 volt using one if the NLA or
Al Zim's voltage converters. These are not just
resistors, which do not work correctly, but a true conversion
electronic part.
