S90 Silver or Gray Paint Color - Raabe Rattle Can Match

#1 Post by Marc Allingham »

Looking for an off the shelf product that matches the original silver/gray colors found on 1960 S90 fan shrouds and oil canisters (appear to be two unique colors). NLA and Stoddard offer two products by Raabe ... but at nearly $30 bucks a can (yikes!) I'd like to know if anyone has found other products that deliver a good match.

There have been a number of posts on the subject in the past viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6739&hilit=silver+rattle+can+paint but the sub-links are dead.

Marc,
I can give you two paint codes. One is a ACE Hardware rattle can and the other is a powder code incase you're interested in going that route. Both are very good matches to the S-90 fan shroud.

Ace: Light Gray 19717 (bar code 82901 09200 about $9
Powder: Tiger Drylac, ASA 70 product no. 039/70010 5 lb box minimum (enough for 4-5 shrouds)about $75.

your choice but the powder is really nice and very durable.

The revised code for the ACE light gray paint is now 1196401 or i1196401A. At our local ACE Hardware, you can give the cashier the code and they can tell you exactly where it is on the paint can shelf.

BTW, this paint has been suggested for the B/C gray gas tanks. Comparing it to a NOS tank, it appears too dark but, it is closer in color than the other suggested paint, Rustoleum Industrial gray #7581838 which is definitely darker.

Glad to be of help, Marc.

Hopefully one day, someone will compile a list of all the paint colors required for restoration of these Porsche parts.

I've never painted S90 fan shrouds w/Light Gray; they were Metalic Silver like the Supers. The C series became Light Gray. Then again---------?

Thanks Dick. So now I may be back to square one ... if the 1960 S90 shrouds are silver and not gray, is there an off the shelf silver product that closely matches the $30 rattle cans sold by S and NLA?

Dick, I am in agreement with you. A very light silver. Wurth Silver wheel paint is close. I use powder coat exclusively on engine tin. My vendor has several silvers, and one is close enough for me.

So clarity on the fan shroud color is beginning to take shape.

Jim ... I've opted to have my tins powder coated as well and that may be the option I take with the shroud.

But what about the silver colored oil canister? Is there a rattle can that is close?

Wurth wheel silver. When selecting a powder coat, be sure not to use a bright metal flake. It is almost grey, but not quite.

Grey S90's in a factory photo; and here is my unrestored (many years ago) S90 (in a '63 cab):

Jim N. - Thanks for sharing ... so I think the consensus is 1960 to 1961 T5 S90 = silver fan shroud ... 1962, 63 (and perhaps 64 and 65) = gray fan shroud

Jim N. The factory photo makes it hard to name a color. But your original photo shows a more white than silver shroud. Just compare to oil filter or air filters

Bill, the reason I mentioned grey in the factory photo was because that was what the fellow that took the picture thought it was. As it is, I had thought mine to be white as well, but have had a gazillion folks say no, that's what the grey looked like, really light. One thing I do know: the S90's weren't all silver. Think it depends on which year you're referring to.
