Peter,
What brand and variety of oil originally came in your 356, and where do you get some now?

Frank,
Oddly enough, it may be too much of a good thing.
Charles Navarro and others have stated 1200 PPM ZDDP minimum. Here we have 2100 PPM "zinc" (nothing about the phosphorus component.) I recall reading somewhere that too much ZDDP was also not good, and this is way more PPM than I ever recall seeing in list of "good" oils. This is might be more akin to break-in oil.
All I'm saying is I personally would want to research this a bit more before I bought some. Chances are it's good stuff, just sayin' ...

Pete , So is this a synthetic and also where did you purchase it as I haven't seen this in any of the stores around here . I would like to try it in a couple of my classic American irons with the flat tappet cams. Thanks for sharing. George

No it's not a synthetic, which by the way you should not us in a 356. It's been out there for a number of years and the Brad Penn brand is made by Kendall as well but at a higher price. I have been using Kendall in all my Porsche's for over five years.

Bob Thanks for the information. No I don't use synthetic in my Speedster or any of my classic cars. I've been using Castrol High mileage 20/50 in the Speedster and my classic but it is getting hard to find here in this small town. I've been told that Castrol has discontinued there high mileage so will see if I can find a out let for the Kendall. Have a great Laborday. George

Re: New permanent "sticky" topics in the Main Discussion For
I having been using AMS oil every since I was in the Military. I started using Ams in 1976. Everything that uses oil has AMS oil in it. OK yes I am a AMS oil dealer. AMO 10-40 has 1300 ppm zinc which is more than Rotilla which is 1200 ppm. The film strength of AMS oil is 5 times stronger that petroleum oil. I rather run on a film of oil, less friction. I am not trying to sell anyone.

Castrol Edge 5w-30
I know a frequent topic, but looking for thoughts on use of what seems to be a new Castrol product formulated for classic cars with flat tappet engines.

Re: Castrol Edge 5w-30
My understanding is that 5W30 oils are restricted from having a lot of ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) because the phosphorus can poison catalytic converters.
The Castrol Data Sheet doesn’t say anything abou Edge 5W30 being suitable for older “flat-tappet” vehicles (like 356s).
I would stick to heavier oils which are permitted more ZDDP. Try to confirm the ZDDP is there.

Hemmings moter oil
I know the moter oil topic has been beat to death, but has anyone used Hemmings moter oil?
It looks like one more oil with lots of zink for our cars. My computer expertise prevents me
from including a link. Just google Hemmings moter oil .
Thanks Mike

I have no first hand experience with Hemmings Motor Oil, but I'm sure it would be suitable for a 356. The higher zinc content is what the valvetrain in these engines were designed for.
Brian, I searched for Hemmings "moter oil" and the first site that popped up was the site for Hemmings Motor Oil. Perhaps your smarmy filter is on.

Re: Hemmings moter oil
I would like to know who makes it for Hemmings as that would have a bearing on my attitude towards using it. Developing a good motor oil takes a large R&D effort and a lot of experience. I have to believe that they buy it from a known manufacturer and just package it as their oil and sell it at a different price. Maybe cheaper maybe not.
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.

David,
What search engine do you use? Google said (verbatim):
Showing results for motor oil
Search instead for moter oil
The search engine is a arguably more politically correct in the way it nudges, offering a broad hint rather than deadpan irony, but it still couldn't let the transgression slide you notice.
