Re: Hemmings moter oil

#61 Post by Charlie White »

I've never heard of Hemmings motor oil! Maybe I don't read enough. But I sure wouldn't start using it unless I'd really heard a lot of really good things about it first, given all the excellent, tested, major oil brands available out there!

I know that oil properties has been the subject of at least a million posts, but can someone save me the trouble of reading them again and tell me if it was ever determined that full synthetic (or a blend) is good for our motors?

Thanks,
John

Hi Guys

This thread is likely to be moved to the oil thread near the top of the forum. This piqued my interest as I doubted a magazine publisher decided to buy a refinery. This link pretty much proves that Champion is private labeling the oil for Hemmings. Same "unique" bottle (tire tread pattern on the neck), same viscosity's and same verbiage on the box.

Lucas makes a good ZDDP additive. Oil with zinc is going the way of the dinosaurs we used to make the oil. Lucas says that it's "break-in only", but that's just so it can be put on shelves.

Hi,

i'm new on this forum and just got my 1st 356 ; a 356B T5 Super in need of some love...

i'm going to use the Precision matters Full flow oil filter, and was looking at using
Castrol PowerRS V-Twin 4T 20W-50 full synthetic which list the following in the documentation
Zinc alkyl dithiophosphate 68649-42-31 1 to 5 %
converted in PPM : 10000 to 50000 (which seems way higher than any oil listed in this topic...)

am'i doing something wrong in the conversion?

info on the oil here:

http://msdspds.castrol.com/ussds/amersd ... 0US%29.pdf
Bt5 Super - used to be fjord green, was painted brass, then brown... sadness

Greg, I'm no expert on these car but when I got my engine built by Richard Troy in Oakland Ca. He recommended Castrol 20/50 non sythetic and so that is what I'm using with good results cool oil temp and good oil pressure. I do not have a full flow filter system. Some of the folks I've talked to say to run a ZDDP additive if your running non-sythetic oil. The ZDDP additive they use is ZDDP Plus which they get from ZDDP Plus Central. They have a web site from what I've been told. I haven't used any additive yet but may check with my engine builder and see what he says about using it. I know that all my classic american iron buddies swear by it. They add a 4oz bottle of it to everyone of there oil changes (5 qts ). Hope this helps you. And welcome to the registery.
Have a Great 356 Summer.

John,

But did it turn up in a search for "moter oil?"

Castrol VR1 Racing oil notes on its container that it is a "high-zinc formula (that) protects pushrod and flat tappet engines". Looks good to me.

I give up, what's a ZDDP and why should I care about it? So, what's the "best" oil?

Paul,

In this lengthy, persistent thread (and others, try "oil" in the forum search) I believe the what/why is answered many times over ( plus many external links to articles.)

As to "what's the best oil?", if there was a pat answer to that, we wouldn't have all these lengthy threads, and where's the fun in that? ;-)

Look for my posts here (and elsewhere) if you want my opinion, I don't feel like cutting/pasting yet again today. And I'm only an expert on my own opinion, anyway.

Someone should mention that "C" oils are meant for use in compression ignition engines (diesels) and "S" oils are intended for use in spark ignition (gasoline) engines. As long as the ZDDP level is maintained, I'm not aware of a big advantage of one over the other.

Porsche has now come out with their own recommended motor oil for the smaller displacement air cooled engines, I would assume one could do no better than that! The can really looks good too!!!!! (LOL)! Here is a picture
