Reverse gear pops out - 741 tranny

#2 Post by Guest »

Peter,
If you manually put the tranny into reverse with it
detached from the shift lever system then I hate to say but
it is in the tranny. A common reason is the bushing inside
of the reverse idler gear wants to slide out and prevent the
full engagement of reverse. Does the gear feel like it has
all the throw and detent action in to the gear? As an
outside chance, but low on the success odds, is that the
detent is not working right. The detent plugs are located on
the intermediate plate right at the throttle bell crank.
There are three there with a 14mm hex head. The upper most
one is for reverse. You can remove it in the car, not too
mush oil will leak out, and there should be a spring and
ball assembly there. No gaskets used. If it is ok then you
need to pull the tranny. BTW Was it just worked on and for what?

Any ideas if following problem is inside or outside the transmission?
1. U-joint bushings renewed
2. Tried all kinds of settings of coupling relative to shift rod -
shifts fine in 1-4 but shifting in reverse feels like I should be able
to push the shift lever forward more. Car goes in reverse, but reverse
apparently doesn't really lock: it pops out during driving backwards
3. The shift lever assembly if tested stand alone (depressing the shift
lever), pops out of reverse almost by itself, so I thought initially
that was the cause
4. To make sure, I loosened the coupling so there was no connection to
the shift lever assembly and shifted the transmisson manually with a
vise grip from within the car. And there too it popped out of reverse
when driving backwards.

So now I'm wondering if it is inside the transmission. Any ideas before
I take out the whole transmission?

Thanks, Peter

Reverse gear pops out - 741 tranny

#4 Post by Guest »

Peter,
While you had the tranny apart and if any of the studs that
hold the left side cover came out there is a chance that
when they were re-installed they might have gone too far in
and blocked the shift rail. I have had this happen a couple
of times. On the left side of the tranny the stud holes
around the 8-9 o'clock can just poke into the shift rail
passage. If the stud goes in too far it will block the full
action of that shift rail.
Hope that was it, its any easy fix.

Thanks you great people for all the replies and photos!

Yes I had worked on the transmission to replace an axle and readjusted
the rack and pinion play, but didn't open the front end of the
transmission (if it's good don't touch it was the reasoning).

Failed to mention that the transmission shakes during reverse (new rear
mounts but old front mounts. Think the clutch disc isn't the same
thickness all around - had that before with a VW). But I figured even
with that, reverse gear shouldn't pop out.

Actions now are checking the detent, renewing the front rubber mounts,
checking/renewing the clutch disc/pressure plate/flywheel. If all that
doesn't help it looks like having to look at the reverse idler gear
bushing.

Thanks again for all the suggestions!
