The current belt from a 356 sponsor, began fraying and I removed it before it broke. at about 200miles.Tension is 1/2 to 3/4 inch, correct # of spacers. I installed fan belts on my SCCA Conv D for over 22 years and never had a problem On Cinv D race car, using a gutted 6 volt gen and small aluminum pulley. On Speedster with the current problem 912 case, am using a 912 Generator and stock pulley . The alignment of pulleys seems to be ok and their are no discernable marks, tears on either pulley. Anyone have any ideas.?

I only use Gates belts. Double and triple check the pulley alignment.

Also check the generator pulley halves for cracks. If the alignment is OK (check with a straight-edge), check the crankshaft pulley for any damage in the belt area. SOMETHING is eating on your belt.

Cheers,
Wes

Ray,

My first idea is that you got a bad fan belt.

You know what you are doing, so don't start doubting yourself and presume a problem.

If a second, fresh belt gets chewed up, then start looking.

Bob

I had similar problem. Found out pulley halves were bent/warped. New pulleys-end of problem.

Thanks everyone for responding Cleaned everything put a Gates belt on, replaced 1/2 of pulley outside AS that was all I had in my parts bin. If the problem occurs again I will replace bottom pulley and both haves of gen pulley

Ray,

If your crank pulley doesn't have any "chip-outs or burrs" in the Vee, you needn't remove the pulley (your words=bottom pulley).
Usually, the generator pulley 1/2s are the problem over the years if the wrong screwdriver is used in the slot(s) and get distorted and the 1/2s get warped!
