Cleaning blackened heads

#1 Post by John Thiele »

I have a set of blackened heads I'd like to get clean - carbon build up and all. I assume blasting is out of the question. Suggestions? Any approach that's more environmentally sensitive than carb dips (Berryman's et al)?

I tried to locate ultrasonic cleaning services in the SF Bay Area, but no success. Any suggestions there?

Thanks

Oven cleaner.
If you follow the instructions on the tin you should get it all off.
Don't use anything metal to scrape the alloy, plastic or hardwood scrapers only.
I found an old toothbrush ideal.

Find someone in your area with a soda blast cabinet. Thats the best way to clean carbon from pistons and heads. The process will not damage anodized finishes, is not abrasive and cleans up with water.
