Hi:
I know the answer to this question won't bring world peace or lower the price per gallon of gas but it will satisfy my curiosity and save my sanity. While checking my parts stash for a spare clutch cable for my travel kit I came across no less than four cables with the part number 644.423.208.1; very close to the part number 644.23.208.1 listed in all the catalogs for an early A with the type 644 transmission. These cables have 6mm & 8mm ends as they should but instead of 2057 mm/ 80.98 in length they are 1968.5 mm 77.5 in length.
This is a mystery in my household. Anyone have a clue as to the application for these cables with the curiously similar part number.
I don't think they're VW as a Google search showed VW clutch cable lengths of over 2000 mm.
Thanks.

The German manufacturer of the cables lists the following:
356 23 058 1950 mm long with a housing 300 mm long 6/8 ends
644 23 208 1 2060 mm long no housing 6/8 ends
644 423 401 00 2015 mm long no housing 6/6 ends
644 423 401 01 2025 mm long no housing 6/7 ends
Note: in modern times this manufacturer has put a red plastic sleeve on the cable before the ends are crimped in place. This sleeve has their number (not the Porsche number) hot stamped in. That feature certainly has made inventoring of the various cables easier.
