Carl Zapffe wrote:This may be heresy, but I like the present day setup much better with the main key on a ring coming out of the small end of the pouch and the other keys kept inside the pouch on a second ring so that they don't swing back and forth against the painted dash. It's much more ergonomic that way.
Carl, that's certainly not "heresy", at least not to me, but I would not call it the "present day setup". The fobs sold recently by Reinhold Plank and Stuart Zeh are accurate reproductions. Other repro fobs sold by other vendors are not accurate, and I suspect the primary reason is that it is less costly to not reproduce the "twisted" piece and not include the correct dark red liner material.

For my coupe, the original style works well: my original glovebox key tucks into the fob and the ignition key is in the ignition. I can understand why Cabriolet or Roadster owners with more keys might not find that style optimal.

I had a red fob that came with my new 62 coupe. The twisty was at the small end.
I thought is was useless due to lack of room for the 3 keys + the antenna key.
I put it in the top drawer of my dresser and there it stayed for 44 years.
I sold it on e-bay for north of $3000.
It wasn't useless after all.
It had both Reutter & Porsche logo's.

Norm, are the "3 key"s came with your '62 coupe the ignition, glovebox, and shift lock keys? And then you had the antenna key as well.

With the introduction of the shift lock early in the 1960 production year (I think that was when it happened?, Porsches now came with one more key than the earlier cars. Apparently the factory did not give any thought to the fact that the key fob could not comfortably accomodate that number of keys, but they didn't bother to change the design of the fob.

They probably had more fobs than the total car production.

I have no idea why they insisted on 3 different style of keys except the Germans seem to like keys and have one for each door and gate etc.

My 65 has separate ignition and glovebox keys so it didn't change from the 60 model.

I don't remember which key fit the trunk lock on the cabs. Probably a separate one.

Norm, that is correct, that lock was a separate key, I think. It definitely was on my Convertible D.

Third from the bottom on Charlie's chart.

I sent my locking hood handle to Tony Euganeo and got back a restored lock with the proper key. Vey nicely done!

Does anyone know who makes/distribute the most accurate key fob today? Is Stuart Zeh still selling them?

Thanks

Try buying from Reutter: erlkoenig-classic.de. They have a nice selection of faithful reproductions of various items. And they also offer the nice Certificate of Production of our cars that has a lot of useful information !! George

There are several reproductions online with the Reutter crest on the backside. I have a '65 with a Karmann body, any idea's of where to find a reproduction w/o that Reutter crest?

Thanks, I've emailed them to see if there is anything embossed on the back side as its not pictured. I would like one with the curly end rather than a conventional key ring, but beggars can't be choosers I guess.

None of the current ones are anywhere near accurate.

The plank/Stuart ones are quickly identified as repro.

Don Fowler’s are the best but he no longer makes them (and even then he only did that for select restored cars).

I have maybe half a dozen originals and also repros of different types but except for Don’s you can easily tell them apart.

The problem is that they are either too valuable or too fragile or both to want to really use.

Why not try an "original" style 356 Registry key fob?

Are these faithful reproductions of the original key fob. I presume the key fob colour was determined by the colour of the interior. Can anyone confirm ?
