clean oil

#16 Post by Michael Eker »

90% clean oil at 1500 miles is better for your engine than running another 1500 miles on dirty oil. Remember too that the filter and screen does not remove water caused by condensation. You would need a brisk run of at least a couple of hours to clear this out.

3,000,000 boat owners cannot be wrong.

How would you like to have engine touble half way from Gibratar to Rio in the middle of a shipping lane full of 250,000 ton oil tankers.

Get it changed at 1500 or 6 months at most.

Isnt there a suggestion I read somewhere that you can change oil too often - it needs a little time to start working correctly etc. My car makes the oil pretty dirty-looking after a few hundred miles..Sorry, I'm sure this is an old well-chewed chestnut..
Cheers!

oil changes

Every 3000 miles drain the oil via the sump plug, change the filter and clean out the screen.

If the car gets to 6 months since the last complete oil change and it has only done 1000 to

1500 miles or less (or the oil looks particularly black) what I am suggesting is that there is

no point in changing the filter or cleaning the screen. They dont't need it.

Just change the oil, or as much as you can suck out via the dipstick tube.

When it gets to 3000 miles since the last filter change, do the lot again.

By the way the Mercedes Smart car doesn't have a drain plug so you need to drain the oil

via the dipstick tube in any case.
