Took the car around the block for the first time since I've owned it, (some 5 years now, and probably the first time she's seen the road in 15 years). Was having idle issues but played with the idle jets and changed the plugs to NGKs and it idles fine. Now that I can drive it, when I was going down the street or up a hill the car just wanted to die. If I'd pump the throttle a few times it would rev up but I couldn't sustain it. Where do I go troubleshooting from here?
Symptoms include, no black exhaust, some backfires through the carbs, more than a few backfires through the exhaust, new gas, new everything from the gas tank to the spark plugs EXCEPT FOR THE FUEL PUMP if that's a possible cause.
PS, the intermitant backfires through the exhaust and the hesitating when I gave her gas must have been a riot for my neighbors to watch!
Thanks all,
Maiden Voyage!

Thanks all,
Congratulations on getting your car on the road. I hope you have years of fun with her!
Regarding your fuel issues I have a few suggestions. Check your timing. Do you have any exhaust leaks or loose exhaust fittings as such leak points could intermittently alter your backpressure and cause hesitant running that may not identify itself when the engine is running but the car not moving. Definately rebuild your fuel pump with a kit from your nearest Official Porsche Centre or Stoddard as after 15 years the diaphragm will have seen better days and could definately be causing either an oversupply or undersupply of fuel to cause any or all of your above mentioned problems.
I hope this helps. Let us know how you go.
Regards Michael.

Michael,
Congrats! It is always a good feeling when the car is back
on the road. I am assuming that the motor is fresh also.
Begin with a starting point on the motor. Reset the valves
set the timing if you can with an electronic light to about
35 degrees max advance, or at least set the static timing to
10 degrees. This is a bit more but new motors need extra
timing and to be a bit richer. You might want to pull the
idle jets and blow them out it is not uncommon for a new
car to have some debris in the system. Unless you have a
motor much different than a stock one I would start with a
stock jet pack. Turn each idle screw one full turn in and if
you have Solex carbs turn in the idle screws all the way in
and back out 2 full turns, if you have Zeniths use 1.5
turns. Try to keep all the adjustments exactly the same.
Start the motor and if needed crank the idle screws the same
to get it to idle and using a unisyn keep them balanced. It
is going to be a bit harder to idle a new motor due to the
friction of the motor but it should not just die on you.
Tell us what is in the motor so I can get an idea of what is
going on.

Hey Alan, thanks for the response. Here is what I have:
912 engine
Dellorto carbs
New dizzy, plug wires, condensor, NGK plugs
Burscht exhaust, j tubes, no heater boxes
Overall pretty unremarkable.
Since you are the Dellorto guru maybe you can help with the carb issue. At idle I get some pops, or at least little blasts of air coming up out of the Idle Air Inlets. Does that mean I still have some blockages in the idle jets?
Thanks,

May have narrowed it down a bit. When I use my hand to cover the carb on cylinder #2 or cylinder #4 the engine doesn't really do much. But, when I cover #1 or #3 the engine wants to stall. I'm guessing I have some leaks between the carbs and manifolds.

If you have Zeniths, remove them and check the tightness of
the four bolts holding the base section to the carb body.
