Seat adjustment part - how to re-assemble

#1 Post by Guest »

For re-chrome plating, the seat adjustment parts found on both outer sides of the 356's seats were taken apart by the galvanizer.
Problem is, I was not there when he did it + he did not take any photos.
And now it seems, I cannot fit them back together.

Does anyone happen to have an exploded view diagram?
Or could someone explain to me the process of getting the part back together.

Thanks in advance !

Martin,
Try to find a picture of the parts the seat hinges are
almost entirely dedicated parts to each hinge and there are
very few interchangeable parts.

These are from my 64 C Coupe. The parts are back from the platers but I have not reassembled yet so don't have those pics.

Seat adjustment - how to

#6 Post by Guest »

I hope they know how it all works. The parts look the same
but if you look closely you will see the springs are would
different etc. The type of recliner you have had a tendency
to crack on the part that holds the main spring. Look
closely at this part, it can be welded and ground smooth,
usually the welds are not in a seen area. Also when you
chrome the parts you can save a lot of money if the plater
does not have to polish the entire part. For example the
pull lever needs only to be polished on what shows, most of
the cost of chroming is in the final polishing. Also the
inner cover is just unpolished just as the original was.

Alan,
I have just handed the part over to a restauration shop (alongside with a bottle of red wine!), as I could not figure out how to do it.
Hope the guys there can figure it out

Hi,

I have just done my seat recliners (64 C Coupe)

The chrome plating is expensive but necessary, the problems are with re assembly.

You need a special tool to put the big spring back in place, without that you are completely lost the tool needs two pins of 5 or 6 mm dia protruding about 10 mm (half the spring width) on a bar of about 500mm long.

You also need some good luck as the little buggers can come loose and fly around the shop like bees!

If you need photos of the partly assembled mechanisms, email me and I will send them

Good luck

Look at both 356 Registry's "Technical & Restoration Guide" Vols. 1 & 2 for details.
Pgs. 238-239 in Vol. 1 and Pgs. 47-49 in Vol. 2
Vol. 1 gives measurements and a drawing of the tool to make which will remove and reinstall the springs.

John

Piggy backing off an old thread.

I've got my seats back from upholstery and I'm starting to reassemble. The shop sent me a bag of hardware but I can't find a reference for the location of some of the bits or overall assembly.

I'm assuming that some of the screws were rotted and snapped but I' realize that I need 6 per seat.
Where do the chrome buffers go and how many total are required?
I assume that the plastic spacers go between the seat and the recliner to protect the leather. One for each screw up the back and one for the pivot point on the base?

Looks like you are missing the external-toothed, cone-shaped lock washer that goes under the lower pivot screws (none on the seat back screws).

I have been watching this topic about seat recliners and the last posts were about the pivot/hinge bolts. Looking at various vendors sites, they show a hardware set,
for A and Early B, (see photo) with 16 philips head screws, four plastic spacers, four finish washers with square hole, and 4 lock washers. They do not show the actual pivot bolt. My A is different, slotted screws to hold the back to the recliner, and only a large head screw as a pivot, no finish washer, no lock washer, just washer that goes over the boss in the seat base.
I think mine are correct, for A and T-5 Bs. Comments???

Steve, that chrome screw looks like the one used on the lower reflector holes on early B, U.S. delivery cars.

I thought it was a T6 rear seat back pivot screw.
