912 4sp fit T6

Just wondering if the 912 4 spd tranny will fit in a T6 356? What is the reference number of the 912 tranny or what is it referred too like 741, 644 etc?

912 4-speed is 902/1 or 902/01, thanks to 912registry.org

The 902/1 or 902/01 was the designate for the 4-speed. The five speed we all know as the early 911 transmission, the 902/02 and 902/50 (close-ratio, what we'd call "Speedster Gearing".

As the four-speed, like the 5-speed, used dual CV-joint on each half-shaft, it would be the same effort to put a 4-speed 912 transmission into a 356 as it would be to put in a 5-speed. That is to say, torsion tube mounts, banana or other located trailing arms, new supports, etc. etc.

Many have shown it is worth (to them) the effort to do the surgery for a 5-speed, but it would seem a fool's errand for just a different 4-speed--unless perhaps you were going to do a 5-speed later...but why not just do it the first time.

The short answer is NO! That said, it has been done many times by very talented individuals, including Ron Ladow from Precision Matters. The 912 4spd and 5spd transes are identical in apperance and can only be told apart from the Type designation stamped on the underside of the transmission. There are many different designations, some almost impossible to cram in a 356.

A 902/1 is a 5spd a 902/01 is a 4 speed. A 902/02 is a plain old 5 spd.
