ECH attendence

#1 Post by Arnie Fried »

Is it possible to attend the ECH as an onlooker? Does one have to register to just walk around & enjoy the sites? I wish to attend but cannot bring my 356? Thanks for all your answers in this matter, Arnie Fried

ECH attendance without your 356

#2 Post by Kevin Ferris »

Arnie,

I had signed up for the ECH a few years back, in Williamsburg Va. and at the last minute, Miss Karmann had an engine meltdown. I was determined to still go, so I took an 8 X 10 picture of her for the concours and stuck a small picture of her in my I.D. badge holder. Several people commented about the 'absentee' concours picture (some good, some bad), but you know, at least she was there in spirit. As far as attending without pre-registration, I can't help you. Some of the more knowledgeable folks will have to answer that question.

A-
Plenty of people come by and hang out, without registering. There are a couple of things you can't do if you don't register. You can't enter your car in the concours, go to the meals, drink beer in the hospiltality suite (ask Gary Kempton about that!), but I don't think anyone is going to ask you to leave the premises.

Since registration is closed, coming like this is really your only option.

Me and my brother (the silent Unobtanium partner) will be there. Wifes and newborn babies are staying home.

ECH attendence

Arnie,

Of course you can come as an onlooker. Since 356 ownership is not required
for membership in the 356 Registry, there is no requirement to have a 356 at
a Holiday. I attended about 10 Holidays driving a variety of non-Porsches,
which was not as much fun as being there with my 356, but still a very good
time. It is fun to see the cars, but also an excellent opportunity to
attend technical presentations and talk with other members to gather data
for your restoration.

As a non-registrant, you can look at the cars in the parking lot, drive to
Grimes Airfield, pay $5.00 general admission, and view the Concours. You
cannot attend the Winterthur tour, technical presentations, Hospitality
Suite, Goodie Store, train ride, PA Railroad Museum & restoration shops,
wine & cheese party, welcome dinner, Concours lunch, Saturday banquet or
swap meet. The fees paid by the primary registrants and their
co-registrants help to cover the costs involved with theses events.

NOTE: Those non-registered daytripper 356 Registry members driving a 356 to
the Concours will have a separate parking area on the Concours show field.
Their cars will not be eligible for judging or any awards but they can be on
the field for all to see. There will also be a separate Porsche Corral for
those arriving at the Grimes Airfield Concours site driving a non-356
Porsche.

The 2008 ECH is only 51 days from now and I look forward to seeing many of
you here in Lancaster, PA.

ECH attendence

#5 Post by Ken Daugherty »

And I want to repeat, The Hospitality Suite is off limits for
non registrants. At the Berry Hill Holiday non registrants kept
'sneaking in' the hospitality suite and drinking the beer. When asked to
leave they said that ** said it was ok. ** had no authority to grant
that right to his entourage. They were asked to leave more than once.
Then we ran out of beer....
Sunday morning there was a discussion about that fact that was
most amusing....and well overdue.

Here is an update from Bruce Baker regarding this subject.

It is unwise to recommend anything but the 6 September Saturday Concours for any 356er that is unregistered for the ECH. It's not that anyone would ask you to leave, I would just (regretfully but respectfully) ask those unregistered not to come. It would be a waste of time to enter the main hotel if not registered, just to "hang out." (After about 5 minutes, the lobby gets pretty boring.)

We are literally "a quart in a pint container" at the primary hotel and while we really wish we could accommodate everyone, there are limits of physical space to be considered especially in light of the fact that everything going on in the hotel is off-limits to anyone without credentials. (At most[?] Parades, even the Goodie Store is off-limits to unregistered PCA members!)

However, the most prestigious component of the event is the Concours. It is off-site, not off-limits. It will be much better organized than the hotel(s) parking lot(s) for 356 viewing!

The $5 entry to the Air Museum (a not-for-profit entity) will show not only old airplanes displayed and flying, but every model of 356 from 1949 through 1965, every year, every type of 356, almost 300 of them.

Even there, it should be noted in advance that due to space constraints, registered guests are given preferred seating for the Brett Johnson restoration seminar in a very large tent (with a superior A/V setup!). Registered attendees and volunteers ONLY get free coffee, juice, sweet rolls, etc upon arrival and a free lunch, but the other usual airfield vendors will be there from whom to purchase food and drink if you are there as what Eric calls a "daytripper."

It should be noted that along with many others, Mr. Kempton generously donated some money to the ECH. It was specifically earmarked for the Hospitality room and even more specifically......beer! I'm sure that was in penance for a former ECH fiasco, the background for the mention by Adam. Therefore, we will have plenty of beer, some standard brews, some made by a local 356er whose hobby is beer, and some from a very local brewery in popular favor with Lancaster natives.

I question "plenty of people come by and hang out without registering." I have been to a few Holidays and must have missed this element......maybe when I had too much......beer.

Thanks, all,
Bruce Baker, Chair, ECH80-08
