Steering shaft bearing question

#1 Post by Bill Shea »

Hi all,

A friend removed the steering wheel of his '64SC and found the shaft wobbles all around inside the column. I just checked mine and found the same. Checking the manual and parts book, it appears that there should be a ball bearing in a sheet metal housing (?) that centers the shaft in the column. It looks like the outer race is still intact in there but it's severed itsself from the inner one. One vendor lists a replacement for $198.

Funny thing is, I don't perceive a problem. Maybe I'm just used to it?

Opinions anyone?

You don't have a problem and you are not missing any parts in your column. The bearing is there. You just can't see it. The steering wheel center hub rides against the bearing. When the wheel is removed the column will wobble. Just make sure that you have the spring and small keeper on the back of the steering wheel and you are good to go. Your steering wheel probably did not wobble before you removed it and it will not wobble when you re-install it.

Hi Jim,

Not that I would ever doubt you but I did check the cross section drawing in the manual and now see what you mean. Many thanks!

Best to all,

Steering shaft bearing question

Bill,
Generally when this happens the the inner shim which is a L
shaped washer is missing or installed wrong. This shim makes
up the difference of sizes between the bearing and steering
wheel hub. This shim lives on the wheel hub after the spring
is put on then the shim. The shim is installed with the
flange part facing away from the spring. You could also be
just missing the part. NLA has them and I think you still
might get them from Porsche.

Hi Alan,

Many thanks. Looks like all is AOK with my car. I want to check the clearances mentioned in the shop manual on my friend's car. His turn signal doesn't canel on one side and I suspect that it may be related.

Best regards,

...Bill
