Hi Helen,
She is driven occasionally by police officers at special Porsche club events in Germany.
I've seen pictures in Auto Motor und Sport magazine in the past.
Cheers,
Janos

Why did the police use cabriolets versus a coupe? Did they drive these top-down in the winter?

Thanks!

The eBay auction ended with this car bid at $75,100, but the reserve was not met, so it didn't sell. Maybe a private buyer will approach the seller now that the auction has ended.

Seriously underbid IMHO, especially after reading that Janos sold his Polizei 356 for $160,000 way back in 1989. I still wonder how many of these cars are left in private hands. Too bad I am not rolling in play money for something like this. Calling Jay Leno, Jay, are you there?

I am trying to imagine a well built German Policeman, in all his regalia, trying to look dignified and authoritative squeezed through the opening of a sunroof coupe!! :-) :-)

Hmmm, good point! I should think that would depend on the liters per week of good German altbier and whether a desk job or not. The older guys at least would certainly have more sense than to cruise in a top-down cab in mid-winter.

i'm thinking of selling my 1958 356a Austrian police car. It isn't armour plated like the German Police cars where so is quick and nimble to drive.

Hello,

I'm looking for information and photos of Porsche Police cars, which were in service for the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) as escort vehicles for the German chancellor Konrad Adenauer in the Fifties.

As far as I Know the Federal Criminal Police Office had (at least) the following 356 in its service:

- a black 356 Cabrio of the first series from Stuttgart (1950-1952) with splitscreen
- a black 356 Cabrio built about 1954 with folded front window
- two black 356 B Coupé built about 1960.

Attached you find a photo of the first Porsche 356 of the Federal Criminal Police Office. Does anyone of you have more information or photos of these very special police cars?

Thanks in advance!
Mathias

Carl, there are still a "couple" in private hands - some still in full Police dress, others in disguise.

The car of Janoz went through the hands of a well-known German 'dealer' who sold it to Porsche AG. Btw, in '89 the USD was rather weak.

Prices are relative :
I know the sale of a German SC in 2006 that went for 87.000USD and an Austrian A that went in the UK in 2007 for 58.000 USD. :!:

Hi, Martin,

Speaking of prices being relative, so is their condition. Were both actual police cars and what was their condition?
Carl, there are still a "couple" in private hands - some still in full Police dress, others in disguise.
By "disguise," I assume you mean that they have been modified to non-police normal street vehicle use, but I have no idea what it would take ($$$) to return those cars to full police regalia even if the original parts are still available.

It still seems to me that these cars are highly collectible and worth much more than the run of the mill 356. Just my 2¢ worth of opinion, not that I have the money to buy one. :(
