When the gear set profile shift match, you have a properly meshing gear set. Otherwise, the teeth fall prey as Dick has mentioned.

How can one tell a 912 flywheel from a 356 flywheel? Were all 912s 200mm?

912 is 215mm.
Won't fit a 356 bell housing.
356 are 180mm or 200mm
