Generator to Fan Housing Gasket?

#1 Post by Phil Planck »

I have been slowly assembling Foam Car's engine and finally have the generator "rebuilt"(new bearings, brushes, commutator turned) and the fan, housing painted. There was no paper/carboard gasket between the generator back plate and the fan housing when I disassembled. The parts pictorial shows one. How critical is this? This is/was a 63 S90. Thanks.

If you don't install it you'll likely have grime blowing through the little gaps between the housing and the mounting plate on the generator. One of the local shops gave me one after they reassembled my generator/fan along with the advice of soaking it in warm water for a while before tryng to install it. The water helps it become pliable enough so you won't tear it apart trying to get it on.

Phil,

After you put the gasket on (and hot water is a good idea) and bolt the generator/fan assembly to the fan housing, spin it to make sure the fan doesn't rub the housing. Then, when you put the fan belt on the generator, make sure it's running vertical between the two pulleys. If either is off, adjust with shims.

How critical for what? Period correctness? Concours events? Keeping dust streaks off the fan shroud? People pointing and laughing? Please extrapolate.

Thanks all for the input. Jack, I meant, "do I need this gasket, or can I leave it off?", when I used the word critical. My 55 does not have the gasket and I have never noticed any dust entering due to it not being there. Stoddard only lists it for late 356 and 912. Yes, it would be interesting to know if the gasket is "correct" for a 63.

Gen gasket

My understanding was that the gasket was not used on A and Pre A engines. I discovered this after a lot of pointing and laughing at Blackie at a PCA Concour. I was surprised that anyone who knew was still alive but they're out there! KTF

I concur with Tom. You certainly can omit the gasket but it would have been there in '63.

Fan Gasket

Is this the gasket that's under discussion?

Generator plate-to-fan-housing gasket

All;

You must use the slightly longer "hex head bolts=6x12 vs. the 6x10 when using this gasket.

fan cork spacer

#11 Post by Bill Block »

I am reasonably sure a a B-T6 should have the cork shim.

But I have been puzzled by the lack of shim accommodation at the pulley end -- using the cork spacer would seem to move the entire generator and its pulley halves rearward.

I just installed mine a few weeks ago, until it had none. I had to re-shim the pulley after I was done. The gasket moved the generator backwards by about 1/8".

Bill,
The gasket is cardboard, not cork.

Vic is right. The "shim" I would call a gasket is cardboard, at least the one I just got from Stoddard. Eyeballing down the generator pulley, looks to me like it lines up pretty close with the crank pulley.

Put a straight edge on the pulley and check to see that the belt is parallel to it.
