Koni Shock ID???

#1 Post by David Jones »

I just acquired two Koni shocks which at first sight appear to be 356 fronts. However the part # is 80-1668. They are "special D" shocks and they are also 1.5" longer than the 80A-1044 shocks which are correct for the 356. They also have a longer top shroud and a beefier eye at both ends. I checked the part # with Koni and they do not know what they were originally built for and moreover show them as a discontinued shock in 1968 but they have a date stamp of 8/70 on them.
Crosses my mind that they may be for a VW bus or something of that era that required a heavier duty shock. Anyone have a clue as to their original use?
If I had known I would live this long I would have pushed the envelope a little harder.
