Re: What kind of switch for emergency warning lights ?
Instead of re-wiring your 356 to add a switch so that all 4 turn signals flash at once (like the emergency flasher circuit on modern cars) why not just buy a stand-alone emergency light that you can set down on the road behind your car if you are pulled over for repairs? I assume that is the situation you are thinking about. A stand-alone unit is more versatile and you won't have to make any changes to your 356. Search Google for something like "emergency roadside auto flasher" and you will find dozens of products for sale.

What kind of switch for emergency warning lights ?
That’s exactly what I did Barry for my 63 S90. I got two LED reflective triangles that can be seen from a good distance when lit up and since I keep my rear seats folded down, just slid them in there.

Frederic,
My '67 Karmann Ghia convertible has such a switch, it is black and illuminates red inside. Not sure if the Beetles had this, but it is worth checking out so you can comply with French law.
Best of luck,

1967 was the year VW went to black knobs. My '66 Microbus has a transparent red emergency flasher knob. VWs with Eberspracher gasoline-fired heaters used to have an ivory colored knob with a red light. Those switches are rare and I haven't investigated how the gas heater switch might work in an emergency flasher circuit. Those switches might be a half decent looking solution for a 356 forced to adopt an emergency flasher.Sebastian Gaeta wrote:Frederic,

Personally, I would probably try mounting an underdash panel rather than drilling the dash.

Frederic, in about 1966 I installed a four-way flasher system in a 1962 VW Beetle, using a VW switch designed for the purpose which looked like what you are describing. Drilled a hole in the glove box liner for it, which worked just fine.
Before you make any effort to install such a switch, make a careful investigation of French requirements. Remember we are talking about a car built without such a switch originally and delivered before they were required by French law.
If you must install such a switch in your Roadster, my suggestion agrees with others - create (or purchase) a simple under-dash mounting bracket for it instead of drilling extra holes in the dash. Simple brushed stainless, bent and drilled to fit would work nicely and look pretty good. Similar to the brackets used for extra gauges "back in the day".
Bet Jim at EASY can give you some guidance? Or a good local salvage yard in France?

re:What kind of switch for emergency warning lights ?
In the 1970s, I installed an aftermarket Hella hazard flasher unit in my 65SC- flashing red light inside the knob etc, and it's worked perfectly ever since. Came with its own black plastic bracket that attached into existing holes under the dash, and the wiring was straightforward. Back then, authenticity didn't seem an issue, but visibility did.
Fortunately, it's a 12v vehicle, but i would guess that if Hella made 12v versions at that time, they would have made a 6v version too, if only for the 6v VW market. Finding an aftermarket or salvaged 12v unit should be straightforward, but sourcing a 6v unit could be more of a challenge. Good luck.

I would advise you to talk to the authorities and try to convince them that this car was never delivered with warning lights, that adding these would require extensive work and changes to the car and its originality.
Plus, if you show them that you carry a sufficient warning light as suggested by some here, they'll might be convinced.
That way, I got around rewiring my 356 here in Germany.
Good luck, Martin

I liked the shots from La Ferte Alais on your website. We spent several hours there last summer. What a aircraft collection!

Flasher light
Frederic , I have made more than 50000 kms in a 356 A all over Europe in the last years without flashing emergency light. According to what I know this is not mandatory to have it in France for vintage cars assuming you have the adequate triangle and yellow jacket on board. You can contact me via email to discuss this issue in French of you like.
Personally I would not change the electrical installation in your car.
