Remote oil filter/cooler

#1 Post by Graham Kidd »

Im just about to put together an SC engine and I have been looking at the Presision Matters remote oil cooler/filter adapter that fits onto the oil pump cover, has anybody used this and would it be ok to run a cooler and a filter from it at the same time, will it affect the start up bypass system in anyway because its moving oil through the cooler/filter first? or would I be better off drilling the 3 case piece to take unions?
thanks in advance.

I wrote it, so there's a presumption of interest on my part, but I think it's a fair description of the alternatives.
Thanks,

Remote oil filter/cooler

#3 Post by Ken Daugherty »

Graham,
I have installed them in motors and have one of Rons self
contained full flow oil filters and a NLA oil cooler on my personal 65
Sunroof coupe.
In my opinion it is the best full flow filter system. (No hoses flopping
around) The only downside it that you must use a electric tach.
I would stay with the stock cooler location and leave the
original stock oil filter in place. While it will be redundant it
doesn't filter much oil anyway. Leave it for the looks if nothing
else....

remote oil cooler

#4 Post by Mike Wilson »

I just had my engine rebuilt and went with the Precision Matters free flow oil filter, stock oil filter and an aluminum oil cooler. Car hasn't hit over 180 degrees even with the recent hot weather here in Southern California. BTW, it's a 912 case, reworked "C" heads and 1883 cc's.

Full Flow Filter

#5 Post by DEWAYNE ICHIRIU »

:D
On my engine rebuild a PM full flow oil filter was installed and aluminum oil cooler. Took my '64 C to WCH 2008 and engine temp on gauge stayed in the normal range. I had the shield painted black for the oil filter so it is hard to see from the rear of vehicle. I think a remote oil cooler is not needed and there is less plumbing involved. Here are some pics. Good luck.

You can always put a thermostatic sandwich adapter in between the Precision Matters Full-Flow Spin-on Filter pump cover.

That's what I did when I decided to put on an external oil cooler, after the fact. Although hard to see, here's what it looks like installed.

Tom,

Thanks for the thinkauto.com link. I've never heard of a sandwich plate that has a built-in oil thermostat. Good to see that Mocal manufactures them. Ol' Beige ('67 912) gets pretty warm on those cross country drives so I've been considering plumbing an external oil cooler to the external oil filter.
Back to the Ivory Tower I go!
