Transmission woes for my C

#1 Post by Sean Longhi »

Hi Folks.. Please help.

Good news and bad news for my 65 C coupe with trans with only 20,000 original miles.

The good: Shifter ball and cup are in good shape, as is the rod guide bushing.
The shifter rod coupling bushings near the trans aren't too bad, but they'll
get changed anyway with replacements I just got from NLA

The bad: With reverse fully engaged (I cheated and did this manually without
the gear shifter), when I start to let out the clutch there's a horrible
grinding noise. The hockey stick may be
the culprit- I have a replacement, but the trans obviously has to be diassembled to change it.

I still havn't been able to fully engage 2 and 4 (manually), but I'll
keep trying.

Questions,

How do I to adjust the rear shift coupler, from
scratch?

All the lit I have describes what appears to be older models, with rubber
couplings, etc, not applicable to mine.

Any ideas on the symptons. Right now I have 1st and 3rd only!
Is there something im missing here. A new clutch was put in last summer. I sware reverse worked then.

If you can find 1st and 3rd, not getting reverse is not likely an internal problem. Try starting in neutral with the lower portion of the lever vertical; that should give you a good fore/aft adjustment. Then you get to work on the radial adjustment; I start with the lever in the 3/4 slot and make sure it isn't forced against the internal 'stops', but real close. That *should* give you all of the gears.

After you adjust per Ron, check to see if the lock works properly before you button things up. If not, adjust again. This job can take a little time.

Transmission update

#4 Post by Sean Longhi »

Last night we installed the new coupler bushings, then realigned, realigned, and
realigned the coupler some more.

I now have all 4 forward gears. This is without the shifter, so just using
a wooden dowel for a handle in the shifter cup. Hopefully no issues when the
shifter is installed.

No change with reverse, still grinds like crazy when it is put in. The tranny clearly shifts
into reverse, but immediately kicks out with plenty of grinding noise when
the clutch is released.

I think if we have all 4 fwd gears, reverse should fall into place. The
coupler adjustment is VERY sensitive. There's a fine line between having 1-3
kick out, or 2-4 kick out.

It seems the hockey stick is OK since we have 4 fwd gears, so the reverse
shift rail must have the problem, or, the reverse gear has welded itself onto
the shaft as per Al Zim suggestion. Mr. Zim said that this is common for
C cars. The change was made as the C cars started to roll off the
production line. Removing the transmission and then taking the
nose cone off the transmission you can see reverse gear
in the nose cone. Warming up the brass bushing and removing it from the shaft.

Before I drop the trans down...which isnt what I wanted to do....can anyone suggest why reverse now is giveing me a headache. Or is this still a case for adjustmnet, adjustment and some more adjustmnet.

The trans and engine have only 20,837 original miles, and it sat from 1969 till 2006.

Your tips today will be great for tonights effort.

I'd say that guy Al is on to something here. Sounds like you got everything you can out of adjustment.

65 C Transmission today

#6 Post by Sean Longhi »

Hi Folks.

My 65 C w/ 20,000-mile transmission update

Ok. So I adjusted, adjusted adjusted. You guys weren't kidding. Hairline adjustments here.
so finicky.
1st 2nd and 3rd and 4th were fine. 4th you needed to wait till it took.
I was on the highway today.. it was awesome.

First time I have had Coupe 221146 going that fast. Wicked!!!

Going about 85mph, might have gotten to 90.
Did I say Wicked! A Huge smile from ear to ear.

Then, coming off the off ramp, very tough to come out of 4th. Finally got it into 3rd. then, no 2nd or 4th.
Only 1st and second. Now 1st and 3rd are so tight. And even 1st has issues, not fun.
I’m going to re-adjust some more and see if I can’t correct it.
I put mollyslip in hoping to really lubricate everything.

Is this still a case of simple adjustment?
Is my hockey stick in need of replacing?
BTW I still don’t have reverse but wanted to tackle that in the Winter.

Any thoughts?

Sean,
Generally speaking if all is good in the shift system like
good bushings and everything is tight once the linkage is
dialed in it stays there. Are the bushings good? I know this
seems very basic but i have seen several times that the cup
bushing on the end of the shift lever was not popped onto
the ball at the end of the lever. Also make sure there were
old bits of the same bushing left into the cup. Check too
see that the pinch bolt from the coupler to the shift shaft
is tight.
