I worked on an elderly friend's C coupe, which he bought while in Germany in 1965. It was factory 12 volt. He assumed all 356s were 12 volt for a long time before realizing this was not the case. His car was only used a few months prior to his purchase, as the original owner traded it in for a new 911. Unfortunately, my friend passed away a few years ago but at least managed to drive to the ECH at Hershey with the car. Not sure who it was sold to after his death.

how many 356 sc coupes left

#18 Post by Peter Boss »

It is an amazing question with no answer? I have skewered the internet and come up blank. Of the over 1000 SC coupes produced in 1964 (1965 year) there is no real number of how many matching numbers cars there are? I have one and am going through a restoration process but want to know is there a ballpark #??? I love my 356 and it needed some love. Can't wait to get it back in my hands soon. Any information or thoughts would be helpful.

I have a 65 sc coupe Karmann matching numbers and have been tying to find out he same information. IF we are sub 1000 cars fpr the SC coupes, How many do we think are still around with full matching numbers? Gearbox, engine, chassis? Thank you for your post it is helping me in my search. I bought mine in 1997 and have loved it everyday since. They really are a jem to drive.

Funny how these old threads get going again.
For what it's worth, I have a March 1964 all matching numbers dolphin grey with black leather interior Euro Reutter 6 volt SC coupe which came from the factory with "electric windscreen washer system, chrome wheels, 2 fog lights, 2 pair of safety belts, compensating spring, additional fan (fresh air fan), lockable antenna", among other things.
So you can add my car to the list of all matching SC coupes still on the road.

Ballpark - hypothetically speaking you could take all the SC engines that were built in '65. then look at the percentage of coupe vs cab built. Then you could calculate roughly the percentage of SC coupes built. Then we use the '50% of all Porsches ever built are still on the road' statement Porsche likes to use, so you take half of that number. Subtract 'random factor X' for cars that lost their engines and voila.. out comes a number!
