Engine on Ebay - What is it?

#1 Post by Martin Minnich »

I thought the 2L VW engines had a bottom-exit exhaust. I'm not VW savvy, so please correct me.

That's a Type I engine. Biggest "stock" was a 1600cc configuration. It CAN be stroked and bored to larger sizes. I run a 2180.....

Bottom exhaust engines that you mentioned are Type IVs and they can be found up to 2000cc stock. The can be found in buses, squarebacks and 914s.....

Yep... Type 1 with a universal case. Those aftermarket aluminum shrouds are a killer since you can't run the stock oil cooler.

Since it has stock heater boxes I can't imagine it's bigger than a 1776. Anything larger would require a 1-1/2" or 1-5/8" header.

Oh... it's a Bernnie Bergmann engine, so it's good for a boat anchor.

Engine on Ebay - What is it?

Maybe...but not always the case. We have a 2110 in a '66 bug that has
heaterboxes. The heater boxes were made by Gene Berg with 1 5/8 pipes and a
1 5/8 merged exhaust. The "fatboy " mufflers are gross looking so we made
our own muffler from the flange with 2 1/2 tubing and a thrush bullet with a
nice big elbow to bring it back near the rear wheel. Painted with Stoddard
gray heat paint. Looks mean and sounds nasty! And we have heat in the
cooler weather when needed!

Just because it says Bergmann means nothing. That could be the sticker placed on the fancy shroud.
750 buy it now plus 250 shipping for a bug motor isn't a bargain.

I know all about Gene Berg.. i'm using one of their 1-5/8" on my 2180.

These are stock heater boxes, you can tell by looking at them.

And true, the Bergmann sticker means nothing. But I guess it's better than having a GEX sticker on it.

"I don't think this engine runs, I couldn't turn the crank, it might be frozen from sitting for so long."

That thing is worth maybe $50... on a good day.
